What it really comes down to is that whatever is written doesn't matter so much as the person you get at security. If it says markers are prohibited then they will be taken. If it doesn't then they MAY be taken depending on the person who interprets the rules. I would say bring markers and crayons. And let your children know that you packed a new set of markers in the carry ons just in case they aren't allowed. This can be an extra present for being so good about it and not getting upset if they take the markers away.
