Are Magic Markers a liquid?

well i think techically the insides are sponges saturated with ink, and i watch the news every night here at work and i havent seen anything about it. i would think youd be okay, but it wouldnt hurt to find out.

The TSA guidelines are unclear to me, from what is currently available online, give 'em a call to find out. Here's the info from the banned items list:

Who the heck knows what they consider a "liquid." On the CB, someone posted about their husband's toothpaste and deoderant being confiscated.

Ugh.. whether markers are considered a liquid or not, leave them at home. They'll just be a mess on the plane. Crayons are much better.

crayons don't stain as bad as markers and can be wiped off easier if it gets on the tray table so I say go for crayons instead of markers.

I agree but my 8 year old girls are all about the markers. They bought them with their own money and will be sorely disappointed if they get stuck with crayons. Apparently they are just going to have to get over it.

I'd explain to them that the markers may not be allowed and if they choose to take them they may be forced to throw them away. I bet the thought of throwing them away at the inspection point will be more heartbreaking than just opting for crayons.

I agree but my 8 year old girls are all about the markers. They bought them with their own money and will be sorely disappointed if they get stuck with crayons. Apparently they are just going to have to get over it.

You can still pack them in the checked luggage -- that way they can color with them at the hotel, etc. Just insist on crayons for the plane ride.

I would hate to see them have to throw them away at the airport. They would be crushed so I would prepare them that they need to go in the suitcase this time.

8 yo girls LOVE gel pens! Surprise them with a set and maybe a couple of those black paper tablets. Pack markers in checked bags and make a big deal out of saving them for WDW.

at the moment, according to the dft, no paper is allowed on either. they made no mention of books, magazines etc being on the approved list. i may be wrong though. check out their website at www.dft.gov.uk. hope i am wrong but just thought to let you know

I work at an airport and I just went and asked a couple of the screeners at the gates and a TSA rep and they said markers are not on the list of banned items. However, they all said there is the possibility that you will find a screener that will take them away since they technically are a liquid in a container.

Best bet, pack them in the check-in luggage. I'm sure the kids would hate to throw them away at the checkpoint.

I may be wrong but I think gel pens will be considered as a gel and would need to be tossed out. It would be better to stick with crayons or colored pencils for the flight.

You may be right. I was wrong to suggest gel pens (altho' "gel pens" are really just ink, but why complicate the issue - maybe ink should not be allowed for all I know. I have to trust the judgment of the informed officials doing their job. It's really hard to define "liquid" and I think we should make it as easy as possible for them right now.)

We all have to give up little conveniences. For kids this means markers. I believe they can handle the responsiblity of making that small sacrifice and what they learn is "Safety come first."

They'll have a wonderful, safe trip!

Since even "chapstick" is not allowed, I'd be leary of trying to bring markers onboard. I can't imagine markers being dangerous but I certainly don't think chapstick would be either and it is.
