Are "Last Minute" Trips Impossible?

Although it wasn't ever our intent to travel to WDW last minute, we tested out last minute bookings this last year. Between family medical issues and my DH unexpected work load, we made three "last" minute trips last year. We had to change our summer trip to July when my dad had his surgery changed. That trip was suppose to be in August but had to moved up to July 3 weeks. 3 weeks out, our only choice was an OKW studio for our dates. When my dad got a good report 6 weeks after surgery, he paid airfare for us to return to WDW in November since I was away from my family for 3 months taking care of him. Last weekend of F/W, I was not hopeful but would take what I could. Only thing available was SSR 1 bdrm which was fine with us...ended up in Congress Park with a DTD view.

My DH would like to make a WDW trip this year, but his work schedule is just crazy. We've had a few false starts so far this year. So I'm planning a big family trip Dec 2012 with a DCL trip...maybe.

I think it varies depending on dates, type of room and a little luck.

Two years ago we planned a trip about 2 months out the week before Easter - premier season. We needed a 1 bedrm for the 5 of us. The only 1 bdrm on property was AKL CL that I could get for consecutive nights. I think it was 4. We had to do one night in a studio at AKL (didn't tell them about 5th person) and we had to go to SSR the last night. Even though AKL is our last choice we were glad to get a room somewhere. Plus we got to swim in the pool.

Last year we planned our trip (again premier season since it was the week of Easter) about 6 months out. We usually stay at OKW so no problem. At the least minute (2 weeks out or so) I thought I wanted to try BLT for a couple nights. No problem getting a one bdrm the last 2 night of our stay - Th and F.

We have also added nights at BCV twice at the last minute. Once was in June around 22nd because it was DS's birthday and he wanted to swim there. The other would have been the first week of April.

So it goes to show you it can be done, but you have to be flexible.
