Are computer programmers smarter than everyone else?

Now theres a blast from the past. Are there still systems using EBCDIC left on the planet (or does your company have a "don't ASCII, don't tell" policy on this subject)?

Yup that would be mine. Actually the system can only import data either in EBCDIC or ASCII fixed but in can export in different formats, even SAS.

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world - Those that understand binary and those that don't.

Don't forget about those who understand hex and octal.

The "smartest" person in my high school graduating class became a computer programmer.

So maybe computer programmers tend to be smart folks. :)

On the other hand, it could be that me and the rest of my class just weren't too bright. ;)

Anyone who could code in Assembler has to be smart, or crazy

Anyone remember Assembler? Thank goodness it is a very distant memory for me. ;)

Well, I admit to being crazy. I used to love to program in assembly language. I wrote interrupt drivers and device drives for security montitoring companies (ABT, Brinks, etc). It was great! Theres nothing like manipulating registers and memory directly to make you feel like you are really programming.

::yes::

After managing programmers for 30 years, I'd have to say that some are a "bit" smarter than others!

Don't tell my DW that..I may be a good programmer but I'm terrible at fixing anything around the house!

My ex brother in law is a programmer, but he doesn't have any common sense with anything else. Smarter, yeah, in some things.

I still have a "Green Card" that's green....also have a "green card" that's yellow.... (only an old EBCDIC hand will follow this I'm afraid..... :bounce: )

Another old Assembler programmer here. I was an Assembler/CICS-Macro programmer at a bank for years......not on punch cards or tape but pretty darned close.....

Yes, we're....I mean THEY'RE smarter! ;)

If not smarter then at least we're more logical.

I still can code COBOL and our big IBM mainframe still has quite a few legacy systems written in COBOL against IMS databases.

I only did assembler to get through a college class! :p Also had a whole semester of math in binary, octal & hex - needed hex to read those IBM dumps!

The $300 question from the “old programmer’s never die” category is….

Ohhhh… looky here …it’s a visual daily double….

This annoying piece of cardboard has caused many programmers vast quantities of hair in the past…especially after dropping a just finished deck of 400.

do do do do ...do do do..do do do do DO dododododo.......

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: The old punchcard!!!

Ok, I'm a little younger of a programmer than some of you guys, since I never actually had to deal with those -- they were more of a legend than reality by the time I got to college.

P.S. I can't believe anyone actually programmed anything in assembler -- I did enough to pass my college assembly language course, but that was it for me!! :teeth:

ohhh...sorry Bob you are wrong...anyone else?

(remember this is Jeopardy)
