Hi, I am an indecisive resort picker until I found the DIS camping boards. :goodvibes

Here is some back ground, I have been to Disney four times. And it has become my families traditional vacation. But since I was raised in what I consider the camping capitol of the US, Alaska. I found I miss camping:sad2: . I have not camped much since leaving the state. :confused3

I have the free dining promotion and the cabins are included, so I switched my resort to FtW. I am finally feeling a sense of excitement over my solo trip with my children to DW (my husband will be deployed during my trip).

So my question is, Are Cabin people considered campers? Camping for me was a camper on the back of my dads club cab dodge pick up truck.

Are other campers friendly and easy to talk to, I mean, in Alaska you can wander over to other sites and strike up conversation if the people are not in their tents and campers? :goodvibes

WELCOME! Of coarse campers are easy to talk to. Especially at the fort. You're going to have a blast! Also, a big Thank You to your husband.

Sure there are some people who are campers who stay in the cabins. However there are a lot of non campers who stay in the cabins. I think they just need the room

"Cabin People" -- LOL. Sounds like a movie - "The Revenge of the Cabin People" :rotfl2:

I don't think you'll see as many people hanging around outside, visiting with neighbors, in the cabins. Unless you see a neighbor outside, grilling on their deck! Then, feel free to say hi!

But, if you rent a golf cart, or bikes, you can ride over to the Camping loops, and visit with everyone! :goodvibes

My family have always been cabin campers...and while "The Cabin Dwellers" dont interact as much with their neighbors it seems, they do seem to share a love of the outdoors...at least to some degree. My wife and kids have never done any non-cabin camping yet...but that will change in a few days. The wife has never had the desire to sleep in a tent, and until recently...Ive never even humored the idea of a camper. To me, camping involves a tent, to her camping involves a hotel without a hot tub. We stayed in a FtWilderness cabin in December, and she was so completely impressed with the campground, that she has decided that it was nice and safe enough to give tent camping a try this month!!!! Its a start! Now, because I know she wont completely fall in love with tent camping, even under the most perfect conditions....if we get along well enough in a tent for 10 days....I figure she would probably enjoy a small camper of some sort. So, after the tent trip....we'll start making some minor plans for renting a pop-up for our next trip, then a travel trailer on the following trip(these may not all be Disney trips....but Im starting to get the mindset with the cost of fuel of "why waste money on smaller local trips that can be saved for a Disney vacation???)

Wow...Ive veered off topic havent I.....sorry. Anyway....Im a "cabin mutant" and think I come off as a fairly friendy guy...so Im sure theres more out there.

Welcome to the Camping Board.

Cabin campers are campers, plain and simple. Just be sure to take along plenty of beer and wine!

Anyone who stays in FW is considered a camper in my book! Some of the motorhomes that stay there are bigger than the cabins anyway! No one is treated any different, tent, cabin or prevost. We all love to camp!

By the way, please tell your husband that we are very, very grateful that he is keeping our country safe and we all wish him a safe deployment.

I see Jen already beat me to it. There are a few of us here who are retired military AKA old farts. Can I ask a few questions? What unit? Deployed where? Where were you stationed in Alaska? Nosey bunch here (at least I am). If you ever want to share that stuff with us feel free to start a thread. God bless.

Welcome and of course you are a camper! Your in Virginia Beach, I am assuming Navy? My DH is retired navy(though we aren't old farts, ntsammy:lmao: ) He was injured 5 years ago, anyway, what base are you at? We still have a bunch of friends down there. I always wanted to get stationed in VA, we always got what we like to call The Armpit Bases.:lmao: We had fun though.

Feel free to chime in with this rowdy bunch anytime. Also, if you are going to the fort you will need a sitemarker. Check out the thread "We need a way to identify camping board members" I can whip one up for you if you would like! I wish you and your family the best during this deployment. And safe travels to your husband.

I have experienced that many of the cabin dwellers are campers at heart....that are forced to use cabin amenities...

As far as friendly goes...IMHO...I think the cabin dwellers are generally more friendly than some of the million dollar coach "campers" :snooty: .......

The TCD gang started as "cabin people." Actually, we started back when the cabins were "wilderness homes." We would stay in the cabins a couple of times a year. We usually would rent a golf cart. The campsite folks always looked like they were having more fun. So, we tried tent camping, then renting a pop-up, and then buying a pop-up, and the rest is history.

So, welcome to the Fort, cabin person/camper!

Some people get really hung up on "labels" about what "camping" is. Some will tell you it's only camping if it's in a sleeping bag under the stars, some will say tents, some will say rv's. In my opinion...anyone at a campground is camping...no matter where they are sleeping.

I've never found the people here on this board to really care about other people's labels :goodvibes There are some "nameless" ;) camping websites out there that really debate this though.

Here no one cares where you lay your head at night...as long as it's at the Fort  :rotfl:

Well put, Shannon!!! This is why I love this board!!!

Welcome to the camping board! My family and I really enjoy the folks on this board and have always had fun talking with "neighbors" at the campground. :goodvibes

Hope you have a wonderful vacaton at the Fort!! :goodvibes

Welcome! We've found at least at FtW that generally everyone is friendly. Be sure to either rent a cart or bike around the campground and visit.

Thanks to your husband for what he is doing and thank you for supporting him and taking care of things at home.

It's not what's on the outside that makes you a camper, it's what's on the inside ;)

Cabins, tents, pop-ups, Prevosts, 5th wheels or truck beds, it doesn't matter, in the end, it's all modern day camping!

:goodvibes I am an army brat married to a navy officer. My dad was stationed at Ft Richardson, 562 combat engineers, he retired in Alaska and will not leave. My husband is going overseas and that is all I can post on a public forum, it will be for 6 months and I am praying for his safe return.

He is in a boat unit. Not on a ship.:rolleyes1

We have friends at Oceana! We use to live in Nevada. Huge pilot training base there, oh the jet noise!
