Black squirrels aren't very common where I live (NJ) but there is one area that we pass through quite frequently that I have seen a black squirrel. We were going through that area today so I took my camera.

They were seen quite often on the campus of the University of Maryland when my son went there. That is the only place that I've ever seen them.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen one, but I don't know if there are any around here. I did have a gray squirrel try to attack me once. I was on a swing and he jumped up to bite my feet. I jumped off the swing and ran like heck. He chased me about 100 yards until my friend's grandpa started beating him with a baseball bat.

The squirrel was probably rabid, but man, what an experience!:p My DD still doesn't believe me when I tell that story.;)

We have seen them in another town not to far from us here in metro ny. Its the only place I have seen them, and our ds laugh because they are usually only on one corner of a certain block.

We have them in this part of the neighborhood. Some of my friends thought I was pulling their leg about black squirrels until they came to my house and saw one. I think they are cute & beautiful :)

That is exactly how it is with these squirrels. The pictures above are of two different squirrels. We find each one in the exact same place each time.

We do not have African American squirrels in Alabama.

We have lots of these squirrels in Mid-Michigan. They are a type of grey squirrel, I believe.

Lots of them in Syracuse too. But you don't see red squirrels around here. We were just in Gloucester MA camping. I saw red critters that looked like a cross between a common gray squirrel and a chipmunk. I'm assuming they were red squirrels????

Oh, and you could hear them up in the trees. They sounded like rattlesnakes. LOL.

I was told that a pair of black squirrels were brought to the NE from Japan and that is how they started in this area.

We have them in Iowa. I have heard people say that the red/brown ones and the black ones do not get along at all.

Wow, that is so cool! I never knew there were black squirrels. We only have grey ones here. I've also seen red squirrels but not for a long time.

Thanks for the great pictures! :D

That's where I first saw them, in Queen's park. There was one we called the "waving" squirrel; if you were feeding them peanuts, he would wave until you tossed one his way.

Southern squirrels are very scrawny and ratty looking; my daughter is always going on about how cute the ones in PA are; her classmates don't get it.

We have a ton of them in Michigan. We have two that sit on our fence and tease our dalmation. I have to let her out to chase them at least five times a day.
