Are all Steak and Shake restaurants like this?

I always get my shake before my meal. It doesn't take that long, usually within 5-10 minutes of ordering.

I've never had that problem. They do have a habit of bringing out my cup of chili about 5 seconds before my burger comes out, but other than that, no problems!

The SNS around here closed. I can tell you why -- absolutely lousy service.

Yes, the shakes were delivered after the meal was actually all eaten. I didn't order a dessert, I ordered a shake. And it would routinely take 20 minutes to get your drink.

The last straw, as it were, for us was when dd and I went in for lunch on a very hot day. I specifically told the server I wanted our cokes asap because we were dying of thirst. I repeated that to her. She left and the couple next to us said, "Good luck. We've been here 30 minutes and haven't seen our drinks yet."

So I swivel around and look for the server. She is standing next to the pass through pushing her pencil into her hair and scratching her head. For the next 10 minutes. The manager comes over and talks to her. She's still scratching. After 10 minutes, I belatedly realize I don't want to eat anything this woman with what... lice, dandruff...who knows? ... has. I go up and tap the manager and say we are leaving and tell her that 15 minutes has passed since we ordered drinks asap and watching her server scratch her head with a pencil is somewhat offputting.

Her response? A shrug.

And FTR, we are about as far from the south as you can get, so no crapola excuses for bad service will fly with me.

I rarely go there. The first time I went, it took 20 minutes to get a burger. They said that was because they were fresh.

Whenever I say to people that I don't want to go there because it takes so long, they tell me that it is because the stuff is fresh.

I don't care if they have to kill the cow and butcher it; I don't want to wait 20 minutes for fast food.

We have an ice cream place that makes better shakes in less time.

Never heard of them before this (live in NY), but to call yourself Steak and shakes and not serve a steak?

I eat at the Steak and Shake just off WDW property in Orlando. I never have a problem there. My order, including shake, come very quickly.

I never have to look at a menu... "Single steakburger platter with fries and bakes beans. Lettuce, onion, and ketchup on the burger, please. And a regular strawberry shake!"


However, it's worth noting to fans of the chain, it's in some pretty harsh financial straights right now and is facing a shareholder uprising. They're having a hard time making money with the traditional "diner" fare. The Motley Fools has listed SNS as one of their top "death bed" stocks

Well, even with slow shake service, I would take that instead of no Steak N Shake at all. We really love the food there. Sorry to hear its in trouble.

I refuse to set foot in ours. I went twice. The first time the service was beyond slow and the orders came wrong. The manager took some of it off and I gave them another chance.

The second time there was only one other family in the restaurant. It took forever to get our food and when the waitress brought our milkshakes out, she was carrying them with her fingers IN the glass! Worse than that, she has no idea why I was upset about her sticking her finger in my milkshake!

Never again...
