Are ALL hamburger buns whole wheat now?

But, the good news is that the burgers at The Fountain in The Dolphin remain the same. Nice squishy white buns (ahem) along with some of the best burgers on the property.

They're not Disney operated - that's why you get white buns there. It also means if you're on the dining plan, no white buns for you, since the Swan/Dolphin restaurants don't take the dining plan.

can you really make a hotdog covered with cheese healthy with a new BUN? lol

Of course not! This is like making a McDonalds burger/fries meal more healthy with a diet Coke. It's only healthy if you skip the burger/fries.

You cannot choose a white bun, but apparently exceptions are made for allergies or for medical conditions. I don't know if it's a white bun. You can apparently ask for a gluten free bun, but it will not be a regular white bun.

If you just have a preference for a white bun, you can't get one.

The gluten free buns are usually "tapioca" buns. They are not great and may cost more. Like PP said- you don't have the choice of a white bun anymore.

According to the list I got today from Disney, the buns served in most locations are :

Autumn Grain Hamburger Buns- Contains wheat, soy, whey, and corn
Autumn Grain Hot Dog Buns- Contains wheat, soy, whey, and corn

The tapioca buns are Ener G foods.

Yes, I realize that...

I'll strive to make note of that caveat in future postings concerning restaurants at the Swan and Dolphin.

I like to point that out because a great many of our posters ARE on the dining plan.

It's a good idea if you want white buns to seek out places that are not Disney-operated - but some of those places will not accept the dining plan.

We ate at Flame Tree BBQ in AK today and my BBQ pork sandwich was on a regular white burger bun

Too bad that, on balance, whole wheat grains are most often no better, and sometimes worse, for you than the other alternatives. My vote is the choice was made either for cost or to portray the perception of health (to sell more).

Of course, given the nitrites in the hot dogs, the buns should be the least of our worries...

[/soapbox]

Please explain how they are worse? What school of nutrition did you go to? A dry crumbly bun indicates less fat and higher fiber. Wheat bread such as Roman Meal is not better than white bread. Because it is over an processed wheat bread.

But "real" whole grain wheats are higher in fiber AND protien. I would take the dry crumbly wheat one over a white one every day. I would be interested in finding the nutrional information on it. I am glad to hear disney is putting more fiber in their foods.

I'm guessing cheaper. I eat whole wheat just about exclusively except when I'm at WDW. There is no excuse for crumbly buns. That's a sign of cheap, often stale, bread.

My organic (dry and crumbly) whole wheat buns that I buy from Whole Foods are anything but cheap. :confused3

Yeah that whole wheat bun is really helping me watch my figure. Especially after that Mickey icecream head, turkey leg, dole whip, and popcorn :)

Many people try to eat healthy while at WDW. I seek out healthier meals while there and I also jog every morning around the resort. I do not use going to WDW as an excuse to gorge myself. There is an epidemic of obesity in this world. I am not saying you can not have deserts while there but eat it all in moderation.

The are horrible and useless. You realize how bad it is once it's YOU holding crumbs of what once formed a bun. :headache:
Oh -- and one of the crappy bun restaurants was The Wave. So the bad buns are not just limted to counter service.

Interesting Wave offers organic and healthier foods, sustainable meals. Are you sure it is the same bun?

They are made by Merita Breads. They have 4 grams of protien, 80 calories, 1/2 gram of fat and 5 grams of fiber. They are listed on just about every diet website and the people there seem to think they are really good.

I eat healthier all year long (never eat white bread, ICK!) BUT...I think people should have a choice, especially since it sounds like these wheat buns are not any good. I don't have a personal opinion on them as I rarely eat bread at all, I had one of the gluten free buns at Sci-fi with my veggie burger and it was pretty dry, but I expected that.

I don't understand why they cannot give people a choice. It seems like something that wouldn't be that hard to accommodate and it does seem strange that wheat would cost less than white? Where I live the healthy wheat or organic breads always cost more. :confused3

I had a chicken sandwich at Starlight Cafe on Friday just to see how the bun would be and it was absolutely fine. :confused3

It would be interesting to find out if these bunsare really made with whole grain and if so, whether it is 100% whole grain. I think that is very unlikely. In fact, if I had to guess, I'd bet that these don't have much more fiber than regular white buns.

Regardless, these buns are very low quality compared to 100% whole grain buns that I buy in the grocery store.

But how do we know what price point they are buying these buns at? People just assume they cost less. Since WDW is buying in volume I am sure they get a better price. Is researching last night I discovered that this company also sells to schools. So I am sure the volume pricing offs WDW a decent price. Also when you give people to many choices it tends to raise prices and increase waste. I am sure WDW did a poll and researched before switching. There has been a trend there with offering healther choices. It started with the kids menu and everyone complained. They make these changes based upon feedback they receive from visitors. I will eat a burger at Peco's Bills when there however it is not my first choice. Not because I think they are bad but because everyone in my family has the WORST gas the next day after eating those!

where are you getting this information?

NOOOOO! I hate wheat bread and LOVE hamburgers! whyy? This better be fixed before I go in April because I plan to eat an unhealthy amount of hamburgers.

I'm a little baffled by this. I eat nothing but whole wheat, including hamburger buns and hot dog buns. They are NOT dry and crumbly at all. They do not fall apart when I try to eat them. So my objection is two-fold.

First and foremost, eating 'healthy' should be a choice on vacation. I prefer the taste of whole wheat because I'm used to it. Yet even then I recognize the the full impact of wheat overpowering other flavors. If a person isn't used to it, or doesn't like it, she or he shouldn't be forced to eat whole wheat while shelling out hundreds to thousands of dollars on vacation.

Second objection is purely practical. If these really are quality w/w buns and filled with fiber that leads to another concern. For those not used to a lot of fiber it can also wreak havoc on the digestive system. While it's true that it would be good for people to get more fiber in their system, being bloated, gassy and other unmentionables is not fun on vacation.

I'll also throw in the fact that if these were high quality buns, they would not fall apart. Fiber doesn't automatically make bread 'dry and crumbly'. Sorry but that's just silly. As one poster pointed out, cheap bread has more air whipped into it and from a logical point of view, this would make the consistency much less cohesive. Or to put it plainly, they'd be drier and fall apart.

If we pluck down the dollars for a Get Fit vacation, I'm going to expect the food to fit the bill. But this is Disney World! The 'happiest place on earth' as Walt said. You can stuff yourself on sweets until your blood sugar zooms off the charts. You can drink in every park but the MK. My guess is someone in corporate thought it to be a good idea to introduce 'healthy' choices but what we have here Not A Choice.

After all, studies have shown a vegetarian diet has loads of health benefits. So veggie burgers should be an option. But should they eliminate ALL beef and just serve veggie burgers since they're healthier?

The main thrust of the objection here is Paying Customers Should Have A Choice.

That's all. Off my soapbox now.

I am not sure if they were included but did they also change the Kaiser roll buns? At Gasparilla's Grill & Games one of the items I like to order is the Southwestern Chicken Sandwich and it taste great the way it is, so I hope they didn't change the Kaiser roll.

I agree with you Steph!! We are going in April and I want burgers on white buns!!!!!!!

I personally don't care if the bun is wheat or white but I want it to hold together and not fall apart. A bun is meant to hold the meat not disintegrate.

Yesterday I had the meatball sub at Pinocchio Haus and was pleased to see the bun was fresh, and stayed together. :cool1: :lmao: (Was not whole wheat.) Sandwich was good too. Meatballs seemed like the type you can buy at Sam's Club in the frozen section. Nothing note worthy. But the sauce had flavor, and there was cheese melted on top. Wasn't too bad. (Better than I expected.)
