My dd13 said out of the blue her ankle starting hurting Wednesday. Long story but basically saw the ped Thursday and she thinks achilles tendonitis. Hoping that the weekend of rest ice compression and elevation plus ibuprofen is enough but not looking hopeful.

Anyone go thru this and what was recovery and treatment like. Dd is in decent shape. She does non competitive dance and figure skating but did not notice anything during those times. She was sitting down when it first bothered her.

Monday I will try and make an appt with an orthopedic dr assuming that is what the ped says.

Did it pop on her? When I was that age, mine would pop frequently. It would be excruciating pain for a few minutes and then I was fine. We never investigated it with the doctor's because it was fine once it happened. I grew out of it by college. For me it would happen usually when I pushed off on it, especially when I played tennis. But it also popped just sitting around and flexing my foot. If it is anything like what I had, it will probably be more of an annoyance than anything. I do still have some tightness there that makes me try to keep it stretched out. I will stand on the bottom stair with just my toes on the stair. I'll flex my ankle down to stretch out the Achilles tendon. I hope that it ends up being nothing to serious for her.

I second the stretching. When I had Achilles tendonitis, my doctor had me doing stretches as often as possible throughout the day. I also used biofreeze on it four times a day for two weeks or so then twice a day for about a month. I found that it actually hurt the worst when I rested it for long periods of time. For example, first thing in the morning it really hurt. The more I used it and stretched it throughout the day the better the pain. I think it took a couple of months for my ankle to be pain free. However, even though it's been a couple of years since it flared up, I still have to be careful about stretching adequately now before and after exercise. Hope your daughter feels better soon!

DS17 had tendonitis in his knee 2 months ago after about a week of track practice. Pain was so severe he could barely walk. Athletic trainer for team had him stay out of practice for a week to rest it, he had to elevate and ice in the evenings and took motrin. They also had him put an athletic band (not a wrap) around the knee and that helped with the pain too. Hasn't had any problem since then and has been running and doing jumps in track. Returned to practice after one week and was fine.
