Downtown DC rocked and rolled. And the buildings aren't built to earthquake codes. So we are waiting to see if there was damage to the one I work in. At least we do not have very tall buildings in DC.

Tornado just north of here a couple days ago, felt the earthquake today all the way up here in Ontario, Canada! By the sounds of this hurricane, I am considering getting in the tub with a hockey helmet on and bunkering down till everything blows over!

In all seriousness, I have a couple clients that are heading to WDW for their first family vacation on Friday a.m., so I truly hope that Irene heads out to sea for their sake (and mine!!!). I am already picturing the phone call at 4am that their flight has been cancelled!

At this point, I just checked our Huricane tracking at work, it looks like at the worst Tropical Storm force winds and rain at WDW. CC, that's a whole other thing. I hope DCL gets the people who live there out and fast.

I saw someone yesterday asked if there was a Club 33 Hawaian shirt, unfortunately there was not. If they dud have one I would have gotten that insted of the black Polo.

Hi Alan!
That was me. I was half-kidding and half-serious! I didn't see one in the photos, but ya" never know what the mouse will come up with! A very formal black and white Hawaiian shirt would be great for formal night too! :lmao:

Some bad news. I am going to cancel our Hawaii cruise. Starting in mid sept my hours are being cut and my PTO is too. I will now only get 8 weekend days off a year and Hawaill will be 6. So as much as I want to go I can't go. I am ok with it and will go on the Fantasy in Dec instead.

See I really had it in the back of my head that day, that it would have been cool if they did have one. If they did I would have gotten it.

So sad to hear that.

I understand how scary it is, even though I have experienced EQs all my life, for years after our last big one whenever a truck going by the house caused vibrations my stomach would drop. EQ's are a way of life, I have nothing on the wall over my bed, i.e. pictures, my tv is strapped to the cabinet, my china cabinet is bolted to the wall and in fact my whole house is bolted to the foundation. That is living in EQ country.

Val, this was only the second I'd ever experienced, the other being the "large truck passing by" size. This one truly scared me! I grabbed my 3yo DGD and my DD took the new baby and we headed for the front yard. All my neighbors were also outside comparing notes. Thank heavens there were no discernible aftershocks (2 were detected but were only in the mid-2 range). All in all, though, we've been incredibly lucky.

Here in CA I make fun of east coast quakes all the time. I always here how a 3.5 quake rattled people in VA or something. I always say to my self a 3.5, that is a truck driving by my apartment. This though could have been really bad for those as, and I just maybe wrong, buildings and homes are not like they are here and built for big quakes. I am glad to hear all is good.

They did take emergency measures in the power plants in the area of the quake. The folks w/the biggest problems are those who live in older brick buildings.

It has been a rough summer with the weather. There was a tornado that went through the area a couple hours north of us.

Jon

Those are soooo scary too! :scared1: Two years ago, one passed through our area and only missed our house by a 1/2 mile or so. :scared1::scared1:

I'm with you Linda...I'm ready to move onto the ship....We are in Southern Ontario and felt the earthquake today...it was the scariest feeling...I can just imagine what the people closer to the epicentre felt, if I could feel our building shaking....

That ship's going to be full of us :rotfl:.

Oh, no, that is too bad. So sorry :sad1:.

Just got back from a week visiting my son in Austin, TX. Had a great time, but boy was it hot!!! :cool2: They could use the hurricane rain (minus the wind damage of course). Everything there is totally brown and tinder-dry. They haven't had any significant rain in two months and had triple digit temps for over a month and a half...straight. The whole week I was there, the temperature was between 102 and 107! :scared1: It stayed in the mid 90's all night too, so no cooling off then either. They need some pixie dust :cheer2: and some prayers :littleangel: there too! And maybe some sort of rain dance too! :cool1:

I'm back in Massachusetts and it feels really good! I almost need a jacket tonight! :thumbsup2

Good Grief....I go to D23 for 4 days...just 4 days...and you folks have to post 16 pages?????!?!?!?!?!

Ok - the weather is bizarre - no other words for it. I am sound asleep (like all good little night folks should be at 2pm) and am awoken by my closet doors rattling (they do that on occasion when a REALLY heavy truck drives down the cross street at the end of my block)...however, it didn't stop. Since my parking deck is condemned (there was a collapse last year and all decks have been inspected by the city and mine failed :( )...now I am wondering if my whole building is coming down. It was weird quiet - like on 9-12-11 the day after the attacks. no outside noise at all. Then it finally stopped after 3 minutes or so, I heard folks outside yelling - me? I went back to sleep. A gryl has to do what a gryl has to do...beauty sleep vs listening to the obvious? no brainer!

To add to the comments about DCL excursions vs non DCL...I usually take the DCL ones, in St. Petersburg we did the opera...good thingwe did...we got back to the ship 4 hours late!!! Had we tried this using the private company that the Russian Gov't had given permissions to (for DCL travelers to utilize) we would not have made the ship.

That being said - Michael (a lot of folks know who he is) ALWAYS just wanders around the port no matter where we go...then we compare notes. (boy was he angry when he found out he would not be allowed to do so in Russia...) He sees some interesting stuff, but I usually see more. I did just wander around in Gibralter, Dover, San Fran, Peurto Vallarta, Vancouver and Victoria...if I can't speak the language - DCL tour it is! I like to take a tour for the first part of the day, then wander for the second half on my own. I walk from the ship for 1/3 of the time I have left before the FIRST BOARDING CALL (usually 45 minutes before all aboard), then I am sure I have enough time to get back. Worst case - I take a cab/taxi back. BOTH have their positive and negative aspects. I think it is really a personal choice and a comfort level with how well one can plan, and how much responsibility for the timing one wants to take on.

Wow that is horrible you only have 2 more classes but have to wait until 2013 to graduate! I hate that they don't offer all the courses every year.

It is a very small program only 40 students in the whole program - 4 professors - so they alternate the fall and spring semesters (the classes are each offered every other year) and I missed the one class I needed to take LAST fall (mom was sick, and I had to be there for her - she didn't survive it, but I am glad I was there for her). I will be done in Dec '12, but won't walk until May '13.

Report from the D23 Expo:
Nothing regarding DCL yet.....

And nothing said...the one cruise presentation was about the imagineering of the ships- and NO reveal about the Fantasy Stern decorations :confused3:confused3

We generally agree. I know DCL excursions are more pricey....but I really don't like to have to do the research and planning associated with figuring out how to do off-ship adventures in a strange city or country....and I like the security of knowing you can't be left behind...so we always do DCL excursions, too! The only exception we've ever had to that was in San Fran on the recent repo from LA to Vancouver. We were there overnight so we planned our own day (with the help of some local friends) knowing that if we got terribly lost and couldn't get back we at least had the whole night....and then we did our friend Michael's personal tour that he had planned for the 2nd day in San Fran which was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! For the Hawaii trip I think we'll be doing all DCL trips (unless Michael organizes another one).

One never knows who is planning what!
Happy Belated Birthday...many many more!

Happy Birthday Erik!!! Have a great and fun day.
I have to agree, Michael sure knows how to create a a fun and informative personal excursion.

Faith & Pete
indeed he does!!!!

Val- We will be ordering a medium and a large. I'm not so good with e-mail and attachments. Will give it a try this evening. Alex
a medium for Caroline???? you may want to rethink it!! they seem pretty large...Michael doesn't know it yet (please - no one tell him please!) I am ordering him one and he gave me a shirt size of medium/large...Cathy and I actually checked mens shirts out and she takes a small/medium - she is a little larger than Caroline.

Waaahooo! We just experienced a 5.9 earthquake here. It really made me feel a lot of sympathy for those folks who live in CA and NZ! I can't believe how scared I was! They're not exactly a common occurrence in VA.
All ok? no damage in NJ...just nerves are shot...see my comments above!

Holy CatFish, what a feeling.....it was like something you feel, but nothing you can do, out of you control....but no damage/all is good.....:surfweb:
Breaking news: Washington D. C. has just revealed what every body thought was an Earthquake was really the economy hitting rock bottom...:lmao:
sorry had to make light of this situation....

Robin & Angel "D" :thumbsup2
OMG....too funny - can I 'borrow' that line???

Yep, I think it is just about time to sell the house, quit the job and just live on a Disney Cruise Ship year round.

ok - I am in!!!!

The storms have started here already. When I left work it was a HOT, dry 95. As I was driving home, some clouds were gathering and by the time I stopped by the store, there were some light sprinkles. I could not have been inside for more than 20 minutes, but it was POURING when I went to leave. There were people just milling in the entry way waiting for an opening (there is a saying here that if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes). It was a really weird transition all taking place in the course of about an hour. There is thunder and lightening going on right now, but that is a common occurrence around here. I hope everyone up the coast (and everywhere else) stays safe! :goodvibes
EEWWW - be careful! and Safe!

Sorry to hear we won't be seeing you. Have a wonderful time on the Fantasy, I am sure it will be great.

I am on the computer this late because an earthquake just woke me up from my nap on the couch and I wanted to check on where and how big it was. It was pretty small, 3.6, but must have been shallow because it certainly shook the house. What the heck is going on?

Sorry to hear this though the Fantasy cruise should be fun, particularly in the Christmas season.

Wow - 5.3 earthquake in Colorado yesterday, 5.9 in Virginia today and the east holding their breath waiting to see if hurrican Irene decides to visit. Saying a prayer for all of you.
Val
It has been a crazy summer Mother Nature has dealt. From the tornadoes and severe storms in the midwest, to the quakes and hurricanes. It has been nuts!.. Hope all are well and stay safe!..
Hope everyone is okay and safe.

As my DD would quickly reference "2012". One does have to wonder what's going on, nature certainly is behaving strangely.

Wow how fast things can change in 24 hours !! Praying and sending good thoughts for everyone on the East Coast ! It's going to be a scary couple of days.
