Reference renting a car in St. Maarten:

Very safe, drive on same side as N. America, St. Thomas is other side of the road like in the U.K.We didn't have a problem at all, signs are well marked, if you get off the beaten track like we did, the roads are not maintained and full of pot holes.Gets fairly hilly with winding corners the further north you get, ( Orient beach area). I have seen far worse streets in major cities in North America.I felt completely safe as did my wife, our daughter had a great time.In Canada if you rent a car on your credit card, most will honor the insurance, Not too sure about in the Caribbean, peace of mind for a $15 insurance charge I think is money well spent. The car rental company will give you a well marked map, wouldn't worry about getting lost.

This is an interesting option. Spending 3 days on the beach is perhaps too much for us (since we live 10 minutes from the local beach). Has anyone here ever rented a car/jeep in St. Maarten? I only hope it will be safe for kids, without their booster seats.

We rented a car in St Maarten in Feb and had no problem at all.The rental agencies are just to the right in the taxi area or opposite of where you would get on the water taxi to head to Philipsburg. If you hit the St Maarten sign, you have gone too far.We didnt have a reservation and had all kinds of vehicles to choose from and one of them was a jeep for around $80 U.S. without the insurance, you can haggle on price and drop them down very easily and you will see why when you get there. Its a gauntlet to get through and all the companies are trying to get your business over the competition. Do"Not"rent form the Anguilla Brothers or family, they will give you the better price but their vehicles are sub standard and not what they will show you on the display card. We rented from them and the car we had would not start a few times and it looked as though we may not make it back in time to get on the ship. I am a mechanic and this car would have been pulled off the road in North America.Stay with the big companies, Budget, Tilden...Do the big circle of the island with Oyster Bay, Orient beach, then just follow the road all the way to the top into the french side to Marigot, down to Maho beach and then back into Philipsburg. Total is around 40 miles with all kinds of fantastic places to stop for pictures and purchase gifts etc, way cheaper than the cities, less than 1/2 of what you will pay in Marigot and Philipsburg for the same items. Was by far the highlight of our cruise, great way to see the real island, way cheaper than the excursions and we hit 4 beaches. There is an area right by Maho beach where you can park the vehicle and walk down to where the planes land.We had to pay for parking but still amazing pictures.Have fun and stay away from those Anguillian characters that will try and get your business, shady characters!!

Good morning everyone! TGIF!

Tami - welcome to the DIS, the DCL forums and of course this cruise meet.

We've kicked around the idea of a DIS meet at 3pm on embarkation day. Is everyone up for that? We've always done them on deck 10 but have gotten complaints about the heat. So how about The Promonade Lounge on deck 3? What does everyone think?

good morning all!! It's Friday!!  We are up for a DIS meet at 3pm. You guys pick the location, we are not familiar with the ship, so it has to be something easy. ;)

Hello Tami and welcome! I'm Kay. I'll be 34 on April 25th, so will be celebrating my birthday on the Magic. My DH is 35, DS Josh is 12, DD Kaylee 8. This is our first cruise and we are sooo very excited!!

Ill find out if sis and her kids are up for it..I cant believe we are cruising next month!

7 weeks, eh?

Maybe by then we'll be able to shovel our way out of this mess.
For updates, check out www.pediascribe.com
If you're in a warm weather area, please don't comment "oh, it's 80 degrees and sunny here."
HA!

thanks for posting those pics. Can't wait to see the big Mickey ears!! We will be spending the night before the cruise at my SIL's in Orlando and I am actually happy it worked out that way because now I get to experience the "driving over the bridge and seeing the Magic for the first time" that everyone is always talking about! I already told DH that he has to drive because I'll be a blubbering mess!

Hi all,

thank you zerog for the pictures, how i remember stand in line so excited to enter the ship on our first cruise. Thank you for putting it in, I have downloaded and am now using it as my screen saver.

By the way, does anyone know it the ship will be leaving port tonight on the ronjon webcam.

The DW and I would like to catch the next one.

Also Welcome Aboard Tami & family. Looking forward to meeting at the dic meet.

It looks like the Magic got off to a late start today. Its only 60 degrees outside but the wind is blowing hard and steady. I imagine that everyone went to deck 9 for the Sail-away party.

Today was opening day for Little League baseball. My DS7.99999 plays in the minor league (coach pitch). The coach put him at first base today for the 1 inning bat-around and he did well. His first game is next Saturday and I can't wait because I enjoy all the games. We've got some new fields and the county went all out (beautiful grass, concession stands, announcer's booth, etc.). Its great to watch the kid's faces light up when the announcer calls out each kid's name as they come up to bat. :mic:

Your welcome for the photo's. I posted those to help build everyone's excitement.

Good morning everyone! Happy Sunday! I am happy to report that I now have a dress for Semi-formal night. My shopping day was a success yesterday.

No Karen it isn't fancy at all. Very tropical with a little "bling" on it. I think it will be perfect for semi-formal night.

Woo Hoo- a UTOP

PDFG and all our friends who need it!

did anyone read over on the main board that the Magic has been having issues with one of her engines for several weeks now and it caused her to not being able to dock at CC and was late to one of the other ports (St. Thomas or St. Maarten, can't remember now without looking). It worries me just a little... I hope they will get it fixed before our cruise!

As long as she doesn't sink, I'm good. :)

Just back from the same cruise.

The WIDESPREAD scuttle on board was that one of the Magic's five engines was down, and had been down, or at least been having significant issues, for a number of weeks. Therefore, the Magic could not make it down to St. Maartin in a timely fashion at the beginning of the cruise as there were strong winds and currents to contend with. We've had no problem on other, non-mechanically challenged ships in similar weather. We've cruised extensively and the issue was not entirely weather related. At partial steam, the Magic was simply not able to contend with the wind.

There was also a ton of motion and a lot of sick and staggering people during this portion of the trip due to the fact that the stabilizers had to be pulled in to reduce drag, and thus speed. The nurse on duty in the Medical Center on Tuesday said she had never treated so many cases on seasickness on a cruise.

And despite the fact that the officers said the engine would be repaired in St. Thomas, it wasn't. And in fact, a second of the five engines went out on the way back up to Castaway Cay on Thursday. Our server told us that the ship couldn't properly thrust sideways on three out of five engines, which is why we could make it nearly into the slip at CC but were unable to move sideways into position at the dock.

If this is, indeed, all true, it's disappointing that Disney did not inform passengers that there were mechanical issues that could greatly affect the nature of the cruise. I would have elected to postpone. Of course, that would have been far more costly to Disney than the $100 OBC for each cabin!

A cause for concern! Read on...

I think it is so sad that people swear, scream, rant and rave because they miss CC. I understand that it must be so disappointing but it is what it is, it's how you deal with misfortunes like this that show your true character. I feel sorry for the kids that had to witness that sort of behavior from adults. They should feel blessed that they were able to go on a cruise with their families in the first place.

So, knowing what can potentially happen, we on this roll call should agree to a pact **** No matter what happens, we'll make the best of it and maintain a smile upon our faces **** :bitelip::bitelip::bitelip::bitelip::bitelip:

Nonetheless, let's keep our fingers crossed that everything gets worked out.

The key to me is to go with the flow and I agree with Karen - as long as we aren't in lifeboats watching the ship sink I'll be happy. I would think issues big or small happen every cruise but only rarely do they effect the passengers. I plan to just enjoy the cruise no matter what happens.

On our very first DCL cruise we missed Castaway Cay due to a hurricane a few weeks before. While we were disappointed we didn't dwell on it for long and we had the time of our lives. Must be why we've been on 9 more since then and have 2 booked. Also on the 10 day in 2004 we watched as the Captain struggled to dock the ship and then found out all excursions were cancelled. However the memories of that cruise are filled with so many wonderful things we saw and did and all the wonderful DISers we met.
