I have a Saturn Vue that needs new keys made as I wore my others out, far as I know it doesn't have chip in it.

Also need one made for Ford Taurus as we only got 1 key and lets say AAA is "sick" of us calling for lockouts. No chips in this key either.

I live near Columbus, OH but prefer not to have to drive that far.
Last 3 keys I had done outside of dealership didn't work :(

Some types of keys can only be done through the dealership. I need a new one and it will cost me 188 dollars, but I have a car that is expensive.:worried:

Have you checked with the dealer? Does it need a battery?

I've had car keys made at Home Depot and they're around $2/key and work fine.

DD's car has a key that's chipped and I had it made by a local locksmith for $125.00. Dealer wanted almost double that.

It has a new battery, it's a worn key as it just takes playing with it to get it to turn in ignation. out of 4 keys only 1 works without playing with it and that's the key I had cut when I got Vue.

I will look into locksmith, one I had done at Lowes didn't work as one done at walmart didn't. Only keys that ever worked were ones I got with car when I bought it and ones I had done at dealership at 7.00 bucks a key. And Since there is no more Saturn Dealerships I'd have go to GM dealership.

I also have a car that doesn't have chips or such in the key, just a regular old-school key. Had 2 spares made recently at Lowe's for about $2/each. They both work perfectly fine to open all the locks, as well as start the engine.

You've gone thru a lot of keys, I wonder if it's not the keys but a problematic ignition..?

WELL it maybe (be my luck) but I bought car used and both keys that came with car were well used. The third one worked until recently but it's been being a pain and I'm sure it hasn't taken the best care of or maybe I just got lucky and have been using key to old saturn.

If it has no chip in the key, Walmart can make the keys, even the odd shaped ones now.

Normal car Keys are simply double sided keys and usually cost double what a one sided key would cost or in other words about $3.00. If it is one of the special cut keys, it can range from $20+ at Walmart or $100+ at the dealership.

The problem here is that the keys are already worn out, unless you have a good one to make a copy of, you will most likely either have to get a locksmith to make a new key manually, order one form the dealership or replace all of the locks and ignition with new ones and have new keys.

I have a "good" key for my Vue, In past keys I had cut at walmart didn't work but it's been a few years. The ford I'll try dealership or locksmith as I wouldn't think of trying to get new key from that one.

Wow, how times have changed! After the key and reprogramming, I was told that to replace my key it would be 400-500

I was quoted even more. I have a Camry, and the keyless remote is built into the top of the key instead of being a separate, freestanding key. The replacement cost? $600. I hold onto that key for dear life!lol

My Saturn Vue key is chipped and quotes are coming in upward of $300 to replace a lost one.

I have never heard of ignition keys wearing out though.

Holy cow! I have an expensive car, and it is only 188 to replace. Are they filled with gold?:sad2:

It's ridiculous, isn't it? I looked at my DH and went, "I could get 5 nights at Pop for that!"lol

We don't have an ignition key for our car but the "key" (I assume it's still called a key!) that I have once sort of accidentally went through the washing machine. Cost me £150 which is around $220 to replace. :sad2: hopefully I won't ever make that mistake again!

I was just at our local Ace hardware store getting extra house keys cut and they had a sign advertising car keys made with chip for $89.00. Our 10 year old ford minivan has the power doors and while another key runs us $35.00 at the local dealership, the box that opens the doors is about $90.00.

How I miss my old truck. The key was worn nearly to a straight bar of metal as was the ignition. I could start my truck in the parking lot at work during the winter to warm it up, pull the key out of the ignition, and lock the doors. Conversely, I also once locked the house door while going outside with no one home. Jumped in my truck, turned the ignition with a screw driver, and drove over to my mother-in-law's house to get a spare house key to get back in.

Didn't bother me a bit with safety. I probably could have attached a sign on the window explaining how to start it with a $100 bill taped to the sign and would have gotten a note saying, "no thanks, $100 isn't enough to take this piece of junk." :rotfl:

You can buy the OEM key blank from Ebay sellers or online parts stores and just take it to the dealer to be cut and programmed. Sometimes you can even find programming instructions online and do it yourself. It's usually some silly string of "turn this on", "turn that off", turn the key, stand on your head while pressing the brake pedal and turning on the A/C (LOL!), but it works and is free to try and I guarantee you, the tech at the dealer is doing the same thing. If you have another key with keyless entry or a remote, you'll need to re-program both of them. We've replaced keys and remotes and have never paid more than $100 to the dealer for programming. Hope this helps!

I use home depot for about 3 bucks for a non chipped key, and they have started selling and making the chipped keys for major models for about 30 bucks. A real bargain. never had a problem and they guarantee.
