I have only recently begun reading about the Southwest companion pass. Am I right in thinking that if I apply now, I will have until the end of December (a full year) to earn the 110,000 points to try to get the companion pass for 2019?

Would you recommend me getting it now or waiting for an sign up offer above 40,000 points?

Thete are actually referral links out for 50k points currently, and the sw biz card is a 60k bonus right now. I'd recommend checking out the I love credit cards so much thread for some more details and lots of expert advice. There's also a dischurners reddit page with referral links that you could use. They are super friendly and helpful! To answer your question, yes you could apply now and start earning and have until the end of the year to earn the 110k points and the cp would be good for the remainder of 2018 and all of 2019. Working on this myself right now also! If you get close to the end of the year you would just want to make sure you hit the spend (not including annual fees) in the calendar year and have the points post to your acct in that year.

I would get the Biz for 60k and then a personal using a referral for 50k now. You would apply for the Biz first since you need to be 0/30 (no apps in the last 30 days) once approved apply for the personal. That puts you at 110k automatically. If you quickly meet the spends, you will then have CP for the remainder of this year and all of 2019.

I don’t own a business but I’ve read little things like selling things, babysitting, etc count. Would I need to do anything with my taxes or social security to get the business southwest card? Otherwise, maybe I should get 2 personal cards?

Thanks for any help. I’m new at this and will look at the love credit cards thread.

Chase considers selling things either locally or online, babysitting, etc all as a small 'business'. I got my first business card based on my selling online.

As others pointed out, there are personal referrals for 50k for the SW premier and plus. Many of us have them and if you hop on the "i love credit cards" thread, just ask to join the site (super easy!!) where those referrals are listed. We are not allowed to post them here on the DIS.

If you applied for the SW business (60k) and one of the SW personal cards (50k), you'd get your CP much earlier and have it for all of this year and 2019. If you are concerned about the SW business card, you can apply for both personal cards one right after another (using different browsers) and that would bet you 104k from the bonuses and spend. You'd need 6k more to earn the CP.

Hope that helps :)

Thank you! Last question... could I apply for 1 personal card now and then in 30 Days or maybe longer, apply for the other personal one?

I don’t mind waiting until 2019 to get my companion pass

Thank you! I appreciate it!!

All of the 110k RR points need to be earned in the same calendar year. You can certainly apply for one personal now and one later in the year. But you'll want to make sure the bonuses post in 2018 or wait on the cards (both of them) and get the bonuses in 2019. Once you apply and are approved for the card, you have 3 months to meet the required spend (it ends up being a little longer than 90 days). Early summer 2017 and early fall 2017, they offered 60k bonus on the Plus and Premier personal cards which made it easy for people to earn CP so you never know if they might have that offer again. I am just waiting for SW to post my bonuses and we'll have CP again. (Our current CP expired on 12/31/17.)

Thank you! I read where someone’s companion pass expired, so then their spouse applied for 2 southwest cards and did the same thing to get the companion pass for another 1-2 Years. How did you get another companion pass right away?

If I know I can get another one for 2020 with my husbands name because that’s when we might go to Hawaii, then I would get the southwest cards now so I can have the companion pass 2018-2019

That's what we did. My husband's CP just expired so it was my turn to apply for the SW cards for CP. And then he will do the same thing in late 2019 when mine expires. We typically fly SW so it work well for us to only have to purchase 2 tickets (with points) and then DS flies free. It's the one set of CCs that DH willingly lets me apply for.

Did he cancel his cards as soon as the pass expired or ?

Chase card bonuses are churnable (meaning you can get it again) every 24 months from when the bonus posted to the account. So, yes, you and your dh could set up a way for each of you to get the CP every 2 years.

No, I actually canceled them before he had even held them for a year. He is already bugging me to close mine especially after the fraudulent charges we just had.

You can certainly apply for the cards separately! Just know as @Alexle2007 said, you want all the bonus points to hit in the same calendar year. You will earn CP for that year and the following year. You just don't want a situation where you earn 50k this year, apply for the business card end of this year and those 60k hit in Jan 2019. You would not earn the CP that way.

I love my SW card and don't really want to cancel it :D Is there a card you would recommend to take its place? Ink? Sapphire? And how soon can I cancel DH's new SW cards? I assume you don't lose your points or CP status once they post to the RR account, correct?

I was a SW only for many years and then my eyes were opened to how many wonderful CC's are out there that earn far better rewards :) I highly recommend you ask these questions on the 'I love credit cards' thread as there are some very knowledgeable people on there who would love to help guide you to what card is best for your needs. The Sapphire preferred and Sapphire reserve are much better earners than the SW and the points can be transferred 1:1 to SW :) Same for the Ink!

You will not lose your SW points if you cancel the cards because they are attached to your RR account and not to the credit card.

I have been following (sort of--pretty much a novice) that thread lately and have learned a lot. It's hard for me to let go of my SW card, LOL, but you've given me incentive to give it a go. Thanks!

If only I could get DH to give up his stupid BofA card that earns nothing and charges things like international fees. He could be earning so much but he is stubborn and very old school. I'm surprised he agreed to let me get the SW cards in his name for CP, but now he's bugging me to close them. I can't seem to talk him into at least getting a BofA card that will earn cash back or something.

Funny! Lots of dh's like this. Sometimes they come around (like mine did) and sometimes not. Either way, as long as he is ok with you getting your own cards, I say go for it. He may eventually come around because he is impressed by what you are able to pull off. Once he gets to fly free and stay in hotels for free, well, that can change opinions real fast lol!

I have been worried about fraudulent charges in the past. I have gone in and set up alerts/ text messages on all of my cards. It took about 5 min online. I was able to choose/ modify my alerts. I get an alert any time I use it at a gas station, any time > $50 charge, any time it is used for internet purchase, or any international purchase. Any time I get gas I receive a text before I pull out from the gas station. Feels a little silly but I always know it is working.
