Applebee's Waitress Canned After Posting Pastor's Receipt

The pastor was very rude.

When I leave a tip in cash when I pay for a credit card, I always write "Cash on table" on the tip line.

I should start doing that. We leave a cash tip most of the time but pay the bill with cc most times.

I agree the waitress was wrong for posting the picture and for that, she needed to reprimanded.

I also agree the pastor was way out of line. DW used to work in the service industry when she was in college. She would tell me there were often times, even if she would get tipped the 18% on a bill, she would probably only take home about 40-45% of the tip after she split it with the bussers, hostesses and paid taxes on what she made after the split. So in the instance with the pastor, the waitress may only land up taking home about $3.00, which is less than 10% of the total amount of the bill. I don't think the pastor realizes that the waitress doesn't get the whole 18% in the end.

I'm with others, if she were my pastor, I would stop going to her church. I'll try to word this without stepping over the No Religion rule. Christians are taught to love one another as much as Jesus loved them. Where's the love from the pastor?

i think i found the post on reddit, all it shows is a partial signature, no credit card info...

i think that was the one...
if i were the waitress/waiter, id think this was some kind of joke...

One article I read said she changed the photo after she realized people were trying to track down the pastor. The original had the whole signature (not sure about credit card info). She assumed the signature was illegible.

The moderators of Reddit edited the picture - it originally contained the signature.

Lots of Redditors were trying to find the person and messaging the OP to confirm the identity of the pastor.

What I read is that it was a party of 15, 10 adults and 5 children. They all sat together, but requested the checks be split. I don't know if this was an attempt to circumvent the 18% gratuity, or because they didn't want to do the math.

I didn't think the entire CC # is ever visible on the receipt, it is usually just the last 4 digits.

She signed PASTOR clearly enough that she wanted to brag about her title a bit.

Since they wanted to pay all the checks with the same cc I imagine it was a way to try and get around the auto tip.

It doesn't matter if the pastor was rude. It's not ok for servers to be rude to customers, much less release personal information behind their back. It's not professional and reflects poorly on the restaurant. To create the kind of atmosphere that keeps customers coming back you can't worry about petty stuff. The customer has to be king. Have you never seen Restaurant Stakeout?

OP, the $34 was NOT the total of the bill. The pastor requested the bill be split many difference ways in attempts to circumvent the 18% rule.

The pastor is a jerk, plain and simple. You're embarrassed that this story got out? Then don't do jerky things.

If you spilt a bill 5 ways, and everyone tips 18% on their own portion, then the waitress still got the mandatory 18% gratuity on the total bill.

If you split a bill 5 ways, and just one person tips below 18%, then yes, that would be getting around giving her the full 18% on the entire bill.

Unfortunately, we don't know what everyone else tipped. The pastor still tipped (in cash) 18% gratuity on her portion of the bill.....after crossing out the automatic 18% gratuity on her bill. Which is redundant. And after making that stupid comment about not wanting to tip the waitress 18%!! That's so laughable! :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

No kidding. The pastor was a cheapskate, but the server was way out of line! And should be fired.

There's a website called Funny Receipts where people post pictures of their receipts with weird or funny mistakes/writing on them, only they make sure to blur out any names, phone numbers, or other personal info. That was the server's big mistake...not blurring out the name and/or credit card info. Otherwise I'd think it was perfectly acceptable to post the picture online.

Not excusing anyone's actions here but as a former bus boy in high school, I can tell you that there was A BUNCH of people who don't tip at all. What the guy did was wrong but at least he didn't completely screw her over like I've seen some people do..

Who said anything about Christian or Jesus? Supposedly she's a self-ordained pastor of a 15 member congregation. Could easily be some crackpot cult whose members agreed with their leader's actions.

i never understood why its a mandatory 18%. wouldn't that just make the waiter/waitress lazy since he/she knows he/she will get tipped no matter of the service? If i dont think the service is good, i dont want to pay that much tip... either that or having to complain to the manager... i would think that makes things worse...

This is the only thing an employee is guilty of.

It's like adding insult to the injury when you're expected to be quiet when you're being bullied by somebody. What kind of example are we setting for our kids that hear about this story???

.

While the pastor was a jerk, and a self-important jerk at that, this is in no way shape or form bullying. We've got to stop crying wolf if we want to stop real bullying.

When I first read the receipt, I interpreted it as the pastor was mad about the "auto" gratuity, I was thinking she just didn't want to pay the tips on her credit card, she wanted to leave cash, but they were trying to take away that option.

In any case, the note was snarky and rude, and never should have been left.

I read the comments at the end of the article, and I can't believe how many people refer to the pastor as a "he". This pastor happens to be a woman!

Anyway here are some thoughts:

1. Notice the crossed out tip reads $6.29. In the article, the pastor says she left $6.29 in cash on table. And the waitress claims she was stiffed....

2. The pastor makes note of only giving God 10%, so why should the waitress get 18%. But again, the cash the pastor left on the table was $6.29....which is 18% of the total amount. So the pastor crossed out the 18% gratuity, only to leave 18% gratuity on the table! Uuugh, so confusing! :faint:

Anyway, read for yourself, and see if you understand this:

I understand perfectly as I've been reading about this all day. The pastor is a liar and did NOT leave a tip.

Jim

She is a minister for "World Deliverance Ministries" who believe in God and Jesus.
