Apple Picking and this Apple Dumpling recipe

We went apple picking over the weekend, so I'm right there with you! We bought 3 bushels, which is I guess about 30lbs. of apples. Yikes!
I have a dehydrator going with apple slices, a crock pot cooking apple sauce, and a caramel apple cake in the fridge. (it's the one out of the newest food network magazine, and it is super yummy)
I made the mountain dew dumplings last year, and we loved them! I had completely forgotten about them until you posted the recipe. Thanks for the reminder!!
What are you baking?
I think I'm going to make some apple bread to freeze, and probably can some apple pie filling, but I don't know what else.
I wonder if you can freeze apple pie unbaked, or if the apples get all wonky if frozen with out being processed first?

I have an apple crisp in the oven right now! It was a recipe that someone posted on another dis thread.

I would love any apple recipes you can share - especially the applesauce (preferably crockpot) and the apple cake.

I'll let you know how the crisp comes out!

oh that caramel apple cake sounds good, I will have to check food network for that recipe! I want to make applesauce, pie, crisp, and more of these crescent roll dumplings, I think I am addicted already!!

Also picked apples this past weekend, 50 lbs to be exact. So far I have made Apple cake and apple crisp. So yummy! Will have to try the dumplings.

This! I would love to try a crockpot applesauce too. :thumbsup2

I printed out the dumplings recipe and plan to try to it this weekend. Sounds like I'd better start a diet before I eat them though. :rotfl2:

I have Ball's Blue Book - Guide to Preserving

for Pie Apples it gives this:

Place apple slices in boiling water 2 minutes and cool in ice water. Drain. Pack apples into plastic freezer bags, plasstic freezer jars or plastic freezer containers. Seal, label and freeze.

I haven't personally used that recipe yet but everything I've tried from the Ball book has been good.

The apple crisp came out GREAT! I had to use a yellow cake mix instead of white because the cake mix inner bag had a hole in it, and I was afraid to use it. I used Cortland applies.

I don't really have a recipe, just kind of eye ball it, but this should be close and you could just add things to taste.
I just put about 20 apples (I used gala, macs, and golden delicious), 1/2 cup of brown sugar (you could use white, we just like the taste of brown), some cinnamon (maybe 2 tsps.), and about 1/2 cup of water (I use apple or orange juice). Sometimes I add a little pumpkin pie spice too.
I use the thing that peels, slices, and cores the apples all at once, the one with the handle that you crank. Then I just stick all the ingredients into the crockpot, toss to coat apples, and cook it on low for about 8 hours.
As a bonus it makes your house smell wonderful all day!
You could also easily cut the amounts in half if you don't want a whole pot full of applesauce.

I've made this recipe before and it's really good, but how did you skip the Mountain Dew? What did you use as a liquid?

MMMMM, just took these out of the oven and they are GOOOOOOD!!!!! I just wish I had some vanilla ice cream to go with it....A must try!!!

I have fully baked an apple pie, let it cool to set up, then cut into individual slices and froze. Then I thaw and reheat in the oven since I prefer warm apple pie :thumbsup2

extra melted butter, LOL..........I didn't substitute anything, it was sugary and gooey after baking, I don't know what it is like with the mountain dew, I will try it with the soda next time.
but they were so good anyway, it didn't matter, they were eaten here by everyone within the hour! LOL
