Hi, can anyone help me choose a comparable or better mac? Right now I have an HP 6GB DDR3 640GB laptop. I do photo editing and machine embroidery and have tons of files.
Thanks so much!

I have an IMAC and love it. Sorry I don't know much about GB, but it's light-years betternthan the Dell we used to have. I would recommend an IMAC to anyone.

I've heard great things about the latest refresh of the MacBook Pro line. Versus a PC the prices will be higher for the same amount of RAM, hard drive, and screen size, but there are many converts to the Mac who have no regrets about making the switch.

But the OP should look closely at whether the software they're using is available on the Mac. That's probably more of an issue with the machine embroidery software than photo editing. How specialized or sophisticated are the requirements? Are alternatives available? Most Adobe products are available on Mac, but for some photo editing you might be able to get by with Apple's iPhoto, or the Mac-only product Graphic Converter. (DW uses both.)

A MacBook Pro or an iMac sound like they would work for you.

The people who work at the Apple store are awesome at only selling you what you need, so if you have one near you, you should make an appointment to see someone. They will also give you one-on-one help in learning your new computer.

I have an iMac but my photography hobby takes up a lot of memory, so I got an external hard drive to store the big stuff on so it doesn't clutter my computer. Works great and got it on Black Friday fairly inexpensively.

Thank-you all! I'm looking hard at it but the $3100 price tag to get exactly what I want is making me hesitate. In the end, I'll probably get it but I have to do some rationalizing with myself first. :)

My daughter has an Imac and loves it.
She does run into occasions (she is in college) where she has to use a PC because a teachers assignment, or a website is not Mac friendly.
"epcotprincess's" Apple store must be different than the 2 here, customer service is a joke at both, and lord help you if you need help after the sale. My daughter insisted on a Mac so we ended up at Best Buy. Their sales and support folks have been great.
I would seriously consider an extended warrant, at least for an Apple laptop. We go through a battery a year, which would have cost me $109 each without the warranty. It will be going in over Spring break to get the track pad replaced, and the magnet is the power cord has lost it's magnatism, so that will be handled then too.
My daughter is like most Apple users, loves it, and doesn't seem concerned with problems that would have been going nuts if it were me.

Just to clarify, this is the after-support I'm talking about:

Learn something new about your Mac by taking a complimentary workshop at an Apple Retail Store. All workshops are taught by people who really know the Mac and are eager to share their knowledge with you. You’ll learn Mac basics, find out how to use Mac applications, and discover new tips and tricks.

For full disclosure, yes, I used to be an Apple employee during college, and Apple employees do not work on commission, which is why they do not push bigger computer sales on a customer-- I like that.
