opinions? problems?

we have wireless internet at home....does that work with itouch as far as emailing/instant messaging?

any battery issues?

it will be used mainly for music storage. any speaker/docking suggestions?

I have an iphone, but can tell you that with the wireless access at home, yes, you can do anything on the internet you want. You can have it set for your regular email, or access other accounts via the web, you can do IM, open word documents. (the phone doesn't have Flash, so likely ipod doesn't either but maybe?)

Yep, i have the itouch. I like it. If you have a wireless connection in your house, you can use it for internet and messaging once you download the messenger application. As far as battery goes, it's not that great. I have the first generation though, I hear the second generation is supposedly better. But if you're using it to listen to music, I would turn the wifi off, as the wifi drains a lot of battery, even if you're not on the internet.

I have had one for a little over a year. I've had one for a little over a year and have been on lots of wi fi networks without problem. In fact, I am on it right now. The cool thing for the Internet is that you see real Internet pages, not a mobile version. They are very tiny to fit in the little screen, but even tiny they are still readable. You can also use your fingers on the touchscreen to stretch the pages so they are bigger - you will only see part of the page then and can scroll to see the rest.
I am not sure how much battery time I get right now but I agree it's important to turn off the wi fi when not using it.
You can also get a lot of little extra applications. I have about 35 of them right now and most were free. Some are for fun - like games, but there are also a lot of useful ones too.

I love mine. The only problem is that the battery charge doesn't last long at all. Maybe 2 hours or so on full charge.

thats what i am worried about.....it looks like a fun and handy gadget but i am hesitant to purhase it because i don't want something that is useless 75% of the time due to lack of power.
its in my shopping cart on apple.com just waiting for checkout.
how is the battery recharged? does the charger come standard?

It comes with a USB cord that you plug into the ipod and the USB drive. You have to have Itunes installed in order to charge it.
I think the way I worded the charging issue made it sound worse than it is. It will run out in about 2 hours if you have it on for 2 hours straight and are using it for 2 hours straight. You can leave it on and it will go into this "sleep mode" after being idle for a few minutes and preserve the battery, so you really never have to turn it off.
But the Itouch is AMAZING. I adore mine, you can do so much on it. It was worth every penny :thumbsup2

When mine was new, I could use it straight (not just sitting on standby) for 5 hours. A few weeks after I got it, I used it for most of a flight to Europe and still had power left when I got there.
I recently used it for a flight from Minneapolis to Greensboro North Carolina and back and one from Minneapolis to Orlando and back. It worked well on all those flights and I still had power left when the flight was over.
For best battery life, it said to charge it overnight the first time. Also once a month you should let it completely discharge to the point of turning itself off. And, even though it will show it is charged after about 1 hour, you will get a fuller charge if it's left charging for at least 4 hours.

I as on mine for about 1 hour last night, including downloading some updates (15 of them) which is pretty power intensive. I've been on the wi fi for about 30 minutesand my power guage still shows about 3/4 of the battery.
Some other thing to so to conserve energy are to turn of the graphic equalizer and to turn the screen brightness to auto and the slider for brightness to 1/2 or below.

I ordered the engraved itouch 2nd gen for dd16 yesterday! thank you all for your input. i think that she will love it! i'll get her an itunes gift card as a stocking stuffer too! :)
