Does anyone have any ideas for appetizers on Thanksgiving? I have my usual ones...but feel they are too filling for such a big feast. What does everyone do?

We're having stuffed mushrooms, and crab cakes.

We like sliced cucumbers/soft cream cheese/rye bread rounds.

Very good and I don't make too many so nobody can fill out up. p/

and waiting.......I just got two little jars of redpepper jelly and pour that over softened cream cheese and spread this on wheat thins......it is delicious and not really filling.......we have shrimp on spinach leaves for starters and then about twenty minutes later we start to eat......this leaves a little time in between each course.....

My favorite appetizers to bring and share is an easy one.

You use those pre-made filo dough pastry cups you will find in the freezer section. Place a pinch of brown sugar in the bottom of each, then place a slice of brie cheese into the cups, then you top with an almond or walnut or nut of choice (however, the nuttier flavors are best). You then bake the cups at 375 until the brie has melted. I have adjusted over the years to putting some additional brown sugar on the top of the brie too to really kick up the sweetness in contrast to the brie.

We eat Thanksgiving at regular dinner time, around 5:30-6:00. We used to do it earlier but found that everyone was raiding the fridge at 10:00 pm (not to mention, messing up the clean kitchen!). So we have a good sized breakfast, and then I'll put out shrimp, veggies and fruit at what would normally be a late lunchtime. Since I do all the cooking, I go lazy with the fruit and veggies, and buy the pre-cut stuff from the supermarket. That tides everyone over pretty well.

Here is what I am making.....my family is big eaters and appetizers don't stop them.

Veggie Pizza (Pampered Chef recipe)
Dixie Chili Dip (cream cheesesoftened and spread on bottom of dish, then chili on top, topped with cheese. Microwave or bake till cheese is melted and serve with chips)
Pickle roll ups (boiled ham with cream cheese spread on it, roll ham around a dill pickle and slice)
Hard salami roll ups (hard salami and cream cheese)
Chicken salad and crackers
Chips
Deviled Eggs
Maybe a cheese ball with crackers

You see, I was raised that on Thanksgiving day we nibbled on appetizers until everyone got there, had time to visit a bit and ate our "big dinner" in the afternoon. Well, I've been married for 16 years now so I'm used to it but my when we go to my in laws for dinner (which is every year and then I have to make time for my family for dessert so my mil won't throw a hissy fit that we ate dinner somewhere else :-( If they say dinner's at 1:00 then when you hit the door everyone swarms the table. (Usually a crowd of 27 adults and kids). I have brought stuffed mushrooms before (why I replied to this post) and so many people were eating those that not all the "traditional food" got eaten and although she didn't say it I knew she was ticked. One Christmas some of my brother and sister in laws begged me to make gumbo and I thought, "Hey, it's just a soup course and it IS something different that what we have EVERY year so why not?" I also brought 3 other traditional vegetables and desserts) Oops. MIL was extremely unhappy. "That's not a traditional dish!" (We live in Louisiana. We like a little spicy stuff even with our turkey and dressing) and it was a cold day. My gumbo was GONE and other things weren't. Since then, I just make the same things every year as to not ruffle feathers. Everyone else in the family WANTS me to make different things since even though tradition is wonderful, we eat the SAME things Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Even the kids complain. My in laws and I get along great and it's only the holidays we tend to get frustrated with one another. Sorry to vent but I feel better. Anyone else deal with something like this and am I wrong for just wanting to bring one dish that's a little different???
