So I had my appendix out 3 weeks ago. It had perforated and therefore a more complicated surgery with 5 days in the hospital.

The issue is I am still not feeling well. I have pain/pressure when I walk/stand and my mid-back starts hurting. I also have some tummy issues and often feel nauseous/dizzy.

I have had a follow-up CT scan and everything looks fine.

Is this typical? If you have had this happen, how long before you felt back to normal?

I found this on-line:

"In the days following the appendectomy, you may feel moderate pain in the areas where incisions were made. Any pain or discomfort should improve within a few days. Your doctor may prescribe medication to relieve the pain. They might also prescribe antibiotics to prevent an infection after surgery. You can further reduce your risk for infection by keeping the incisions clean. You should also watch for signs of infection, which include:

  • redness and swelling around the incision
  • fever above 101°F
  • chills
  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach cramps
  • diarrhea or constipation that lasts for more than two days

Although there’s a small risk of infection, most people recover from appendicitis and an appendectomy with little difficulty. Full recovery from an appendectomy takes about four to six weeks. During this time, your doctor will probably recommend that you limit physical activity so your body can heal. You’ll need to attend a follow-up appointment with your doctor within two to three weeks after the appendectomy."

I'd see your doctor if it's not improving soon or if you start running a fever.

Hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon. :)

Unless they have changed things in the past 20 years, they pump gas into your stomach to expand it so they can see what they are doing in there. Every time I've had surgery, and I've had 5 for female problems, I always have back pain and stomach issues for awhile afterwards. As a matter of fact that normally lasts longer than the incision pain does but that just may be me because I'm hyper sensitive to all drugs, even woke up in the middle of my hysterectomy because they couldn't use a heavy dose of anesthesia on me. Just to be sure, you should call your doctor in case it's something wonky.

I would contact your doctor and report your symptoms because doctors do/should want to know how things are progressing. Definitely seek immediate assistance if you run a fever. That said, your experience is consistent with mine post-appendectomy. I would say I felt fairly normal at 4 weeks (with some lingering stuff) and close to 100% at 5/6 weeks.

Ds19,otherwise healthy, had an emergency appendectomy in June. No rupture, but he still had a non laparoscopic surgery. His recovery took longer than I would have expected. It took about 6 weeks before he had fully recovered. He slept in the living room recliner for a long time.
