Appears to be Noro on the Wonder

Several of my cruise mates on the PC Repo leaving on Sunday have received calls or emails from Disney about gastrointestinal illness hitting the Wonder on their current sailing. The CDC has been notified and it appears they will be there on Sunday to supervise the deep cleaning. I haven't received an email or call, but the copy of the email states only 3% of the passengers have been reported as ill and 0.5% of the crew. So relatively speaking that is very few people.
WOW~ hoping that it is all clean for August!

Hey there Bear!

I have been informed that when the number of people effected hits 3%, then all vessels have to report it to CDC. There was another vessel the Balmoral of Fred Olsen lines, having novo issue in Norfolk.

Outbreak Updates for International Cruise Ships

Cruise ships participating in the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) are required to report the total number of gastrointestinal (GI) illness cases–including zero–evaluated by the medical staff at least 24 hours before the ship arrives at a U.S. port, when sailing from a foreign port.

A separate notification is required when the GI illness count exceeds 2% of the total number of passengers or crew onboard.

Data on this page were obtained from these surveillance reports and from CDC-led investigations. The GI illness cases reported are totals for the entire voyage and do not represent the number of active (symptomatic) GI cases at any given port of call or at disembarkation.

Cruise ship outbreak updates are posted when they meet the following criteria:

- Fall within the purview of VSP (see about VSP),
- Are sailing on voyages from 3-21 days,
- Are carrying 100 or more passengers,
- Are cruise ships in which 3% or more of passengers or crew reported symptoms of diarrheal disease to the ships medical staff during the voyage, and
- Are gastrointestinal illness outbreaks of public health significance.

FYI the CDC updated their outbreak page for the Wonder on May 2, increasing the # of those affected to:

http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/surv/outbreak/2016/may1_disney_wonder.htm

Cruise Line: Disney Cruise Line

Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder

Voyage Dates: April 27 - May 1, 2016

Number of passengers who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of passengers onboard: 131 of 2680 (4.89%)

Number of crew who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of crew onboard: 14 of 991 (1.41%)

I've never heard of a Noro type virus on an airline. Has that ever happened?

I know they had the famous Legionnaire's Disease in the 70's in a Philadelphia hotel -- that was probably a precursor to the Norovirus.
Well, I think the only way you would know would be if the outbreak was so widespread or so odd that the CFC decided to investigate. The mean incubation period is much longer than even the longest single flights, so it would be tough to trace it back. For sure, Noro can be spread easily and a plane would be a great place for it to spread because it can live on untreated surfaces for wks.

I thought I read somewhere that passenger capacity was 2400? The stated number crew seems higher than I recall seeing as well.. ...experts???

Yeap, I agree that is the regulation. The Belmoral had 159 effected of some 800 passengers...I do not know the Crew count be it's a small ship.

I would also point out that these are regulations, but also just guidelines. Regulations cannot cover all situations. The national and international authorities expect to be called in if something unusual happens.

The last thing a ship operators wants is to be found to not have reported a problem or to to be marked as questionable, because the authorities will start visiting them is each port, over and over, checking everything, and the fines can be very high. This is especially so with cruise lines as everyone has a computer theses days to check on the records of each vessel.

I have seen a dry or wet cargo vessel be hammered over and over, by USCG and other government authorities port after port, checking everything they can think of, delaying and inter fearing with vessel and cargo operations and issuing fines. It is just not worth trying to not report a issue

My friends brother and his family were on the cruise. She talked to them on Sunday and they didn't even know that this had happened on the ship.

Which is why we bring clorox wipes and wipe down everything in our seating area on the plane -- arm rests, trays, knobs, and remote. :crazy2: We also pre-pack everything we will be using on the plane (magazines, journals, etc.) into large zip lock bags and place the bags into the pouches. Some of the stuff we have seen at the bottom of those pouches is.....UGH.

Good advice!!!

We sanitize our plane seats as well and I will not use those seat pocket pouches. I know several people who for for airlines and they do not clean those seats.

You should see how we tackle a hotel room -- my family has the routine down pat :rotfl2:

We were on that cruise and knew because we were told by someone who went to medical that first Castaway Day but, the ban on self serve, after the number of pool closings we witnessed, we noticed that the crew was cleaning specific rooms over and over in masks, we saw room service carts at odd hours of the night cleaning - it was evident something was going on. We really noticed, when we hit Miami customs line, of course.
In my timeline it happened right away (embarkation night or second day) so I surmise that it came onto the ship because we did the cruise just before as well, and it was without incidents and noticeable family and Mickey pool closings and we had self serve the whole time.

Disney went above and beyond to keep those of us that weren't sick, healthy -really I saw our host late in the evening and early in the morning cleaning everything like non-stop.

Let's face it, we took our own responsibility to keep us healthy as well and it is a simple as washing your hands often, not just before eating or after bathroom breaks, but if you spot a rest room-wash your hands, touch the handrails-wash your hands, get back to Stateroom-wash your hands, Get in elevator - wash your hands, on top of the wipes and Purell.
Best advice I was told (from some one at our local Safety Swim, so it happens there too) was to stay out of the pool during peak times. Get there early morning dip a bit and never go under water or open eyes under the water. As soon as the crowds get there ... leave and go shower.

I had noro once, caught it on a road trip from a restroom stop I'm guessing. I was 7 months pregnant. Lost 15 lbs in 3 days and was severely dehydrated. No one else in my family caught it.

I am a sanitizing NUT now, wash my hands so much they get cracked dry. So lots of lotion too ;)

I will be bringing the Purell wipes and Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner Wipes with me on board & making sure my children (and Husband) practice good hygiene!!

It was literally the WORST 4 days of my life. I felt like I was on deaths door and was so close to being hospitalized.

I'm so glad Disney knew what to do and it did not severely impact the "fun" of those not infected!

At Christmas one year our 2yo daughter got it. Like a good child she shared it. Unfortunately my wife was 7 months pregnant. I left my son with neighbors and took my wife and daughter to the ER. They rushed my wife to maternity triage because the vomiting and dehydration had put her in to labor. They kept her there and ran 7 liters of saline into her over the next 36 hours (along with drugs to stop the labor.) It was scary. I brought my daughter home and left her with the neighbors and then went back to the hospital to stay with my wife. When my wife stabilized I picked up my kids and went home. As soon as we walked in the door my daughter threw up (again) all over the kitchen. And then I discovered that the cat had thrown up as well. Of course by the time my wife got home I had it.
And the topper: The wonderful neighbors who took care of the kids got it 3 days later.

That was one infectious bug.

I Hope your family fully recovered an God Bless.

This is not something to be played with. That is why if the Doc on a cruise ship says stay in your cabin, that person should dam well stay in their cabin!

The only bright spot here is the fact that everyone was at home in familiar surroundings with clearly good and effective medical care at hand -particularly for your wife. Glad everyone was fine in the end.

What were the final numbers for that other crew ship that was having a big issue ?

The Balmoral started with 159 guests, however there were only+/- 800 guests on board. I have not followed it since.

I noticed those numbers earlier and that's what made me think to ask. I hope Starwind can find the final total the same place he found Disneys.

I'm assuming their numbers were larger in percentage than Disney. Because my sweet Disney, works harder than anyone else to keep our vacations special.
And if they didn't I'm going to assume they don't have a kids pool. I can't imagine how difficult it is to watch over and maintain healthy control over a kids areas.
