Is as bad as trying to sell a house . . .

This is what I'm realizing . . .I never imagined that selling my old car would be such a hard thing to do . . .I am kicking myself at not just trading it in when we bought DD the Jeep . . .The car is a 92 Mazda, good condition, I'm the only owner, no major mechanical problems, 121k miles, clean . . .only asking 1500 obo and the 2 calls we got on it, both parties didn't show to see it? :confused3

I'm at a loss . . .so what does everyone else do with their used cars nobody wants? :guilty:

We went through this when we tried to sell our last car (1991 Mazda Protege) 2 years ago. There was lots of great 0% dealer financing going on for new cars and we couldn't give our Protege away.

After trying to sell it on our own for 2 months and not even getting a nibble, we took the car to a car auction place and consigned it. It still took two weeks and sold for much less than it was truly worth.

Are you near a university town? A $1500 clean Mazda is perfect for the college student.

Have you tried listing in Craigslist, if that is available in your area?

We listed our car yesterday and it's as good as sold today. She just wants to take it to the mechanic down the street tomorrow and when he gives her the green light (which I know he will), she's going to the credit union to get us the $$..

Granted, this isn't an older car, it's only 4 years old. I'm amazed how quickly this went though!

Hmmm, 14 year old economy car with high miles. Without running through the "kelly blue book" site I would guess the worth to be $500 or less. Coming from a private sale no warranty is provided so even more risk. At a reputable used car dealer they can get, minimum 24-48 hour "change of mind" assurance and maybe a 30 day warranty.
We just bought a 99 grand caravan, 100K miles, with 1 year warranty for $4k

I suggest looking up the blue book value or take it to car max. Their slogan is "even if you don't buy one of our cars, we will still buy yours"

In the past you could donate the vehicle to cahrity and set your own value. Now in Illinois the charitable value is set by what they actualy sell it for.

I did it with the KBB site and that is what private party sale would be for good condition $1,500, excellent condition was $1,800. :confused3 Mileage for that car according to KBB was 98k so I guess I'm over by 23k, but I felt that $1,500 obo was a pretty good starting point. :confused3

Wow $1500 huh? I am soo old.....
Maybe it is the marketing. College town? Post flyers on the campus boards to try and get a check from "daddy".

KBB prices are really inflated. They are better for financing pricing then actual buying. You didn't say what make of Mazda so I went to Edmunds.com and priced out a 626 LX with your mileage and the private party price they listed was $900. A 323 was $680. Try the Edmunds site. Their pricing is more realistic.
