Apartment Application asking for my credit card Number???

NO!!!!!! They do not need that to check your credit! NO NO NO!!

They don't need to check your credit..but they also don't have to let you move in.

Both apts we lived in post college did credit checks. Most of the apts my mom lived in did them as well. If you can't pay your bills, how will you pay rent? That's what the check is for.

We never provided a CC though for a credit check. I would most definitely not give that information.

No no no no no no. If they need your cc to rent to you find another place to live. Just tell them you don't have one.

Just say NOOOOO! I cannot think of any legitimate reason why they would need your credit card number to rent you an apartment. This sounds like a scam to me.

Credit checks are a fact of life, especially in renting and now in insurance eligibility and job seeking. Asking for a specific credit card number though? Is that how they plan to process your application fee?

No Way!!
Of course they're going to do a credit check, but they have no business having your credit card number!!!!

I would just say I don't have a credit card. But of course they are going to do a credit check before they rent you an apartment. Can't get a decent apartment around here without a credit check coming back good!

We own a home that we rent out, and our rental agency takes a credit card number. If the rent isn't paid by the time the next month's rent is due, it is charged to the credit card, along with the late fee.

I understand a credit check but they get that from my Social.........This application is asking for two credit card numbers.....

This is exactly what I figured they wanted it for.

I would never give them that. I would keep walking!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! That is ridiculous. They check your credit through your social security number, not your credit card number. Who knows who is going to get a peek at your application. I've never heard of such a thing!

all i can say is-

when i apply for a car loan i am required to provide my credit card and bank account numbers, same for additonal credit cards, a cell phone account (just added a line tonight and despite having a 7 year spotless history and paying by check each month had to provide one cc number), had to provide one to establish utilities despite an agreement to pay monthly by check...-so if someone is contemplating renting an apartment or home that could be damaged to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars by me, i am not offended if they request the number of one credit card. providing a credit card does not obligate the renter to any agreement by which unpaid rent or damages are able to be placed on the credit card (unless they sign an agreement beforehand).

that said-dh and i sold our home a few months ago and wanted to move into rental property prior to re-purchasing. ALL of the rental applications wanted the name and account numbers of our banks as well as at least one credit card. we filled out the applications but in the areas where it wanted the numbers we wrote "n/a" (not applicable) and 'decline to state'-when we submitted them we explained that we were hesitant due to identity theft potential. all of the potential landlords and rental agencies aknowledged that they could utilize our ssn's to access our credit records-and that the question was basicly on the form as a screening mechanism. if an individual indicated they had a specific credit card but the credit report came back with no history of that card or no history what so ever, by virtue of the person listing that card/number it could be established if they had multiple identities or were outright dishonest (they said it happens allot with young first time renters).
