AP Upgrade Question

I know this has been answered many times before but I can't seem to find a thread with the answer....

I am going to Disneyland for one day in early May and I will be buying a Deluxe AP. The Deluxe AP is blocked out that day (it's a Saturday, unfortunately) so I was planning on buying a one-day ticket online ahead of time and then upgrading later in the day. But I have two questions regarding the upgrade:

1. You can upgrade to an AP during a blackout day for that particular AP and still come and go to the park as you please, as if you were using your original ticket. Is this correct?

2. If I buy a Deluxe AP first thing in the morning (not getting a one-day ticket at all, just buying the AP), is it still blocked out? Or can I use it that day?

I would greatly appreciate any help!

Your AP is always good on the day you purchase or activate it, even if it's a blockout day. So go ahead and just purchase an AP; you'll be fine! But you won't get a MM, if that's important to you.

Confirming what GrandBob is saying. APs are valid on the day that you buy them (or upgrade to them), even if it's a block out day. One main reason is that if you need your picture taken, the Photopass people who take it are inside the parks!

Keep your receipt handy if you park hop! We were asked to show ours at both gates the day we upgraded from hoppers to AP's.

Sounds like buying an AP the first day is the best choice for you. But just in case you were wondering how it works, we have upgraded on the last day of a 3 or 4 day trip since that was the block out day. On that morning, we went into the parks and upgraded and they handed us a block out exception ticket and that was what was scanned at the gate, then the person scanning that ticket just glances at your AP.

It looked similar to but not identical to the block out exception that we bought once for $45 (at the time) when we had planned a day at DLR that we hadn't previously realized was a block out day. Same procedure.
