A friend just went to DL and had 8 day park hoppers once they got home they decided they want to go back in the fall. She asked if they could take the Jan 07 tickets and then upgrade to AP's in Oct 07 and only pay the difference. They figure the AP's would start the first day of the 8 day park hopper (3 Jan 07), but they are not sure DL will upgrade after so many months.
Does anyone know this answer?
Has anyone done this?

The answer would be no. AP upgrades must take place on a day the ticket is in use (you can upgrade on the last day you spend in the parks on a trip).

So you can't do both while at the bank? I don't want to stand in a ticket line man.........let me know if there is a way to circumvent the system.

Sadly, the answer is a definite no as has been confirmed. All DL tickets expire 13 days after 1st use, so any upgrades in your friends' case would've needed to be done by closing Wednesday, 1/17/07. You don't need to be in the parks or have used your tickets at either park on the day of upgrade; you just need to have at least 1 day left or be on the last day of your ticket to upgrade. To upgrade...

If you have not used your ticket yet the day you want to upgrade, you can upgrade at the ticket booths outside & go to the bank to have your picture taken.

However, if you're already in the parks or have already been in the parks, you can take your ticket to the bank & upgrade at the same time you have your picture taken. Fortunately or unfortunately ;) , nothing to circumvent, per se, as it's perfectly acceptable. Much easier, in fact, given the ridiculous lines at the ticket booths outside sometimes.
