I called Universal today because we currently have the Power Pass and I wanted to see what they would charge us to upgrade our AP to a preferred pass. She told me if I wanted to do it over the phone it would cost me an extra $159!! I was confused because the price difference on the 2 passes is only $80! She said to upgrade it for that I would need to do it at the parks because over the phone it is $159 but it would be good until 2016. But I don't need it in 2016.. Am I missing something?

In general upgrades can't be done over the phone, only at Guest Services. Instead of "upgrading you" over the phone they may be offering an early renewal of your Power Pass as a Preferred pass renewal rate + a little bit of credit for the time remaining on your Power Pass. But that doesn't get you to 2016 (although it would get you to late 2015) for an expiration date unless their offering a 15 month deal I'm unaware of.

No clue. I'd just update it at the park. It will just be the difference in the two prices.

$159 + tax sounds like what the cost is for the renewal of a Preferred annual pass. I upgrade my husbands expiring Power Pass in September and that was the cost. Not sure if that is right if you just got the Power Pass recently. He kept the same renewal date.

my preferred pass renewal was $170.33 which included the tax

Then you should only pay the difference in price. I would upgrade the pass at Guest Services at the park.

Although if they were going to extend the AP to Sept 2016 and upgrade them to preferred passes for $159+tax it would be a great deal. That's assuming they could use the extra time.

I had quite the experience this summer trying to upgrade power passes to preferred passes. You can upgrade the passes over the phone IF it is time for you to renew. The price they are quoting you over the phone is the renewal price for the preferred AP. If the AP is already renewed, you must do the upgrade at the park.

Universal will allow you to upgrade your AP type at renewal time for the price of the higher AP renewal - we just did this over the summer - from power to preferred.

It gets a little murkier at the parks when you try to upgrade the AP type. It was my experience that no-one at IOA guest services knew how to do this.

It should only be the difference in price between the two types of AP renewal costs ($135 for power to $160 for preferred). After an hour and a half at the guest services window, I left paying $75 for the upgrade that should have been $25 just to get out of there.

I got everything worked out over the phone when I got home, but it was a frustrating experience.

We decided we aren't even going to bother. We are going down over Christmas and were considering upgrading to go then but it's not worth it and will be too busy anyway. We will just wait until March to go back :)
