AP room rate when upgrading tickets

My husband and I (DVC members) are planning a 10 day trip; first half in a regular resort room and then moving to DVC. I'm considering purchasing annual passes for both of us because we are hoping to take another short trip in the summer of 2021 with our college age kids. If I purchase 10 day tickets and then decide to upgrade while in Disney, can I still take advantage of a possible AP hotel room rate before we upgrade?

You can, but you'll need to do the upgrade very soon after you arrive to show proof of the AP to a front desk CM to qualify for the rate. If you don't show proof, your rate will revert to rack rate.
I believe that you can book an AP rate without actually having it, but you need to present an AP pretty quickly. Maybe by the next day?
You can book the AP room without actually owning any kind of AP.
But, after you arrive you should buy and/or activate your new AP.

Very little chance that you'll need to actually show or present it to anyone at the resort.
(With "on-line check in" most guests don't ever stop at the front desk anyway.)
The fact that you have the AP will be in your MDX account, so that
info will be available to anyone at Disney who may need to see it.

Be sure to do the Disney math with purchasing the 2 tickets with the amount of days needed for each trip vs price of AP.
It used to be a no brainer, anything over 10 days an AP was worth it. But with the cost of APs skyrocketing that may not be the case anymore.

DisneyWishes14 beat me to it. :P

How do you view AP rates without having one? Any time I go to the special offers area and click on a Passholders offer, it has me sign in and then takes me to buy an annual pass 😕

You can't view them online unless you are a Passholder. But, you can call (407) 939-7946 and they will look for you.

Note that when you book a Passholder rate (on the phone or online) you agree to the "Eligibility/Important Details/Terms and Conditions" which include the following point:
"Passholders must present a valid Walt Disney World Pass at check-in."

In my experience, the first thing that pops up at WDW under my name, for example when they scan my MB, is that I have an active Platinum AP. So, as long as it is linked and active in your MDE account, that counts towards the T&C/Eligibility you agree to when you make an AP booking.

Or you can ask here and AP holders on the DIS will check for you. Just FYI, the current AP room discount is good only through July 9th, so no one will be able to tell you what AP discount rates are past that date.
