I am thinking about whether it is worth to get the AP or not. I may do two trips in the next year, one off-site and one on-site.

What sort of room discounts does the AP offer?

Most times it's just slightly more than the GP offer so getting the AP solely for room discounts might not warrent it esp. since only one stay onsite. Another thing to consider are the other perks-free parking is esp. nice when staying offsite. I usually base my decision on the number of days we will visit. For us 13 or so is good, we also get TIW so that's another perk.

Although not a regular perk- we as AP holders in Feb got 20% off in most all stores at WDW, usually it's just a few stores in DTD. Now though May 2, there's 10% off many stores (still a good deal if buying anyway)

Thanks for the info!! I was hoping the discounts would have been a little better than the GP ones. Will need to do the math to see if its worth it. If not, I can still hope for a PIN code for my on-site trip!! :)

you're welcome. In years gone by at times there were AP discounts without a GP for a room only, but in the past few years both have been offered usually about a 5% difference in the amt. off. Not in it of itself worth it for an AP purchase. THe amt of days for entrance (don't forget an AP includes parkhopper as well, forgot that in my other post) is the real factor to think about.(also the 14/day parking if off site )

Just realized your home, we have been to St. John 3 times on Canada/NewEngland cruises from NY. St John is a wonderful place with really nice people!!

We got the AP hoping for resort discounts, but they really aren't that great. They just release the summer AP rates, and they are only 5% more than a general public room. They weren't any different from the rates I got with a emailed PIN code. When I mentioned this to the online CM, she reminded me about the discounts at the stores, minigolf, etc. but we really don't spend much there for it to make a difference either. I'd suggest getting it only if it will cost less for you than park tickets will. The allears.net site has a breakeven analysis for the AP (I think you go to the planning section of the site to get to it.) The other perk is that you can get the Tables in Wonderland card for $75, which allows you 20% off most table service places and some counter service (including alcohol.)

It is very difficult to justify AP purchase for room discounts.

Are you planning to have a car with the offsite stay? AP holders get free parking. That might make it worth you purchase along with park admissions for 2 trips.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

I will be renting a car for the offsite trip, but am not sure on how many trips I will make to the Disney parks as I also plan to visit Seaworld as well. This of course is something I would never do if staying onsite.

I think I will hold off from buying the AP for now, but who knows what will happen when I get there. :rolleyes1

Thanks, I actually live just outside Saint John and see the cruise ships coming in almost daily during the summer. I hope you enjoyed your stays up here!! :)

I just checked the AP rate VS the GP rate for BLT Studio MK view for 2 nights and the AP rate was $575 with tax for the 2 nights and the GP rate was $1175 with tax.

This is for April as well over a weekend.

You have to look at more than the discount percentage. I've noticed lately that the minimum stay requirement for the best discount has been lower for AP discounts than GP discounts. For example, the AP discount might be 40% for days 1-3, and 45% for days 4+, and the GP discount might be 35% for days 1-4, and 40% for days 5+. So not only are you getting a slightly better discount, but if you are staying for four days or more, you would be bumped up to a higher discount percentage on the AP sooner than you would on the GP.

You always have to do the math all the way through to see which deals are going to be better for you. I would never suggest that someone buy an AP just for the room discounts, or any other benefit other than admission. Disney is not obligated to offer room discounts to anyone - they're just icing on the cake if you get them. An AP is basically discounted admission to the parks if you go more than 10 days per year.

Thanks for the info. I guess the main benefit is admission and *maybe* a slightly better discount for the room. Still not sure what the best course of action is. It will depend I guess on how many times I plan to visit in the next year. Just curious, I heard from others that you can book the AP rate and not yet have the AP (as long as you have it when you check in). Is there any way other than calling to get the AP rates?

You can figure out the AP rates buy pricing without the discount and then getting the percentage off on the room from information here or on mousesavers.com for the amt to discount. That won't let you know if the room is truly avail with the AP discount though, so it's best to call if you can't signon to the AP site.
