AP resort discount with non-activated pass?

I have purchased but not activated an AP. I will be activating it in January when I visit WDW. If a resort AP discount becomes available for rooms booked for a May 2018 trip, can I use my AP for a discount even though it has not been activated?

As wdwthanksgiving said, the answer is yes.

I had a room booked under a Florida Resident discount, then purchased our AP's. I was then able to switch to the AP discount, saving us about $135 for our 4 night trip.

Just FYI, this year AP resort discounts covering May 2017 came out 1/12/17. It was 1/14/16 the year prior.
