My family and I are going in Oct for 5 days then onto Disney. And I was going to purchase a AP for the discounts I was wondering is it really worth a AP for only 5 days and if so do I have to renew it or can I cancel after I am done using it .

The value will depend on how much you plan to spend. 10% off most food and merchandise. If you stay onsite AND get a "APH" discount that brings the value of the ap higher.

Of course you don't have to renew. Though you might find you loved universal and want to go back again and again. So far renewals have been an amazing value for me and I can't quite imagine not renewing personally.

Thank you this helps alot. We are staying at the HRH for 5 days and I would like to buy one for the savings in the parks and before I do I was just wondering if it was worth it or not.

Well...you can't cancel it after you've finished the five days...just don't renew it. It will be good a year from when it's first activated at the gates.

You'll have to do the math to determine if paying the money for an AP will be worth it but remember...you will get discounts at both parks for food and merchandise as well as the hotel rates.

Some more info on discounts and perks...
Discounts are kind of convoluted at UOR, no one thing gets you them all. At Fast Food Blvd. there is no AP discount but I got a discount with my AAA card. If you buy your AP or tickets with an American Express card, you get access to the American Express lounge which can be nice on hot crowded days. I think owning automobiles (use keys as proof) from certain manufacturers get you into some private viewing areas. As I said, discounts and perk at UOR can be convoluted.

Is there a discounted rate for renewal of APs, like Disney has?

I renewed my Preferred AP in October 2013 for $170. The cost of a new Preferred AP is $245 for Florida residents and $280 for non-residents now. With Diagon Alley opening in June-ish 2014, I expect these prices to go up soon.

tickets for UNiversal are much cheaper than Disney. We are also going there and it's going to cost us about $1500 for 5 days where Universal is going to cost us about $850 and that is with one AP and this is for 5 days as well
