I'm looking into whether I want to renew my AP that will expire Feb. 20, 2017. The website says I can renew up to 30 days after expiration. I'm trying to get the new AP until March 4, 2018. Does anyone know if the new AP will begin when I purchase it or be retroactive to the expiration date of my first AP. Thanks for your help!

"Renewal" means that you must keep the same anniversary date, but add one year to the life of the AP.

The exception is that currently (during the limited time promotion,) when you buy a new AP, or renew one, that AP will have a 13 month life instead of the customary 12 month life.

Thanks Robo! I'm hoping the 13 month deal will still be going on in January when I can renew 30 days early. Fingers Crossed!

The 13 month deal is available until January 5, 2017
January 2, 2017 is the last day.
From the passholder website LINK:
Plus, when you buy before January 3, 2017, you can take advantage of a great special offer and get 13 months of annual pass benefits for the price of 12!

There have been rumors of it being extended.

Ugh! Hopefully it gets extended.

I don't have full knowledge of your upcoming trip plans, but...
One thing to do is to BUY a NEW AP VOUCHER now (during the promotion.)

Continue using your current AP until it runs out.
HOLD the NEW voucher and don't activate it until your first trip after the current AP runs out.

That way, you'll get 13 months availability that begins from the date that you activate the new AP.

Robo, that is an idea. I wouldn't get the 15% discount for renewing though. I'll have to run the numbers to see if that's worth it. We are planning on a 7 day trip Aug. 2017 and probably will be there again for at least 7 days in Feb. 2018.

The 15% savings is about two month's "worth" of actual use.
If you would not be using the renewed AP within 2 months of the original expiration,
it can make sense to let an old AP expire and wait to activate a NEW AP at a later date.
It can be a bit tricky, but saving 15% does not always "pay," except in very exact circumstances.
It is often better to get the benefit in the FUTURE by purchasing a new AP (or voucher.)
Your individual travel plans can make all the difference.
