AP Renewal - how does it work?

We are newer DVC members, bought our first ever APs last year and are preparing for our 3rd and final trip using them in May the day before they expire.

If we want to renew them, do they become active immediately upon expiration of the previous AP or do they not become active until first use?

If we do not renew them immediately, say we wait until fall... would we then be purchasing APs as new passes or would they count as a renewal at that point since they will have lapsed? We'd like to make sure we get them purchased at the most cost effective, but also not have active passes that we are unable to use to their maximum benefit.

Thanks!

Renewals are good for one year from the original expiration date. So effectively, they are active immediately upon the expiration of your current pass. If you renew after the expiration, it is still only good from one year of the original expiration date. Basically, if you wait too long, it makes more sense to buy a new pass.

Also, you can renew an annual pass only between 60 days before and 30 days after the expiration of your existing pass, so you cannot wait until Fall.
