AP rate and dining plan

I know this has probably been asked before, so please be patient with me. I am a lurker on the Jun/Jul/Aug code thread. I just wanted to know if an AP rate can be applied, even if you have the dining plan. A lot of people get AP's and disney is offering the dining plan for free, so....

Nope, sorry , you can't apply an AP discount to the free dining package. You have to pay rack rate for the rooms in the package to get the free dining - so AP holders really have to cost the whole plan out to make sure it is going to be the best $$$ in their case.

Depending on the resort (especially the Deluxes), sometimes it makes more $$$ sense if you already have AP's to use the AP room only discount (if any show up that is!) for room only and then get the dining card to save on meals....

A lot of AP holders though, have found that they still save money by booking the package - yes, they paid rack rate for a value/moderate in the package, but get the free dining and then are going to be able to take the one day base tickets in the package required for the free dining offer and save them to use later toward new tickets or AP's next time their AP's expire.

This is what makes the most sense, the Deluxes are expensive at rack rates so I don't feel the DDP is worth it, free or not.

I'm considering doing this in September, but I wasn't sure if the 1 day pass was no expiration or not. I'm guessing that it is, since others are doing this.

Yes it is. Last Sept during the free dining I had an AP, but my son and D-I-L did not. I was told I had to either choose the AP discount or free dining. After pricing it out we decided to stay at POP instead of POFQ and went with the free dining. All I had to do was buy one day tickets, then upgrade theirs once we got there. However I decided I wanted to have a ticket paid for in advance so I went ahead and bought us all 7 day MYW with pluses. They used theirs while I used my AP. Before I left I asked to have my 7 day ticket taken off my room key. Guest services at POP said they were unable to do so, however after I got back I read on here that several AP holders had been able to do so. When I went back in Dec (again using my AP) I took the 7 day ticket with me and guest services at MK was able to take it off the room key and gave me a plastic ticket that says 7 DAY MYW with pluses. They told me it would be good forever as long as I didn't put it into a turnstyle (in which case it will expire 14 days from first use). I called not too long ago to book another trip for Sept during the free dining and while I had the CM on the phone asked about the ticket I already had. She told me that if she was me she would keep the one day ticket I have to buy in order to get the free dining in Sept for a future trip. Then use the 7 day MYW with pluses I already have to upgrade to an AP when I go in May (9 days from now ) to use for both my May and Sept trips. That's what I'm going to do.
