I think what I want to do is possible, but want to check.

If we purchase tickets for over new years that last until the blackout dates for the gold pass pass (eg 6 day hopper for Dec 29 to Jan 3), can they be upgraded upon leaving a park to a Gold AP that would cover the last days (Jan 4-6)? Or would we have to purchase a 7 day & can we only upgrade on Jan 4th after the blackout pd has passed?

You can upgrade to a Gold AP during a “blackout”... but you would’nt be able to enter any park during the blackout with your upgraded Gold AP. (Ie if you upgraded on Dec 31, you wouldn’t be able to enter on Jan 1)

Your plan would technically work if you upgraded to the Gold AP before you leave the park on Jan 3.

With a 6-day pass, you would have no advance FP+ for Jan 4-6 (and wouldn’t be able to book FP+ until the upgrade.)..you’d get more days of advance FP+ if you got the 9-day hopper (looks like it would be $555 vs $609 for the Gold AP before tax)
