AP Question

At our recent visit, we took the plunge and upgraded our park hoppers to premium APs; we were already planning to come back in October, and we never know what to do for New Years so we decided to brave the crowds and come back that week., so it was justified......or at least, that's how we justified it to ourselves. :p

The question is, are the premium APs supposed to have any kind of special marking on the back indicating they are Premium? Shortly after getting our APs, we ate dinner at Carthay circle and gave our AP along with our payment to the waitress. She returned and I looked at the receipt and she had only given us the deluxe AP discount. I brought this to her attention and she said that the premium APs are supposed to have the Disney "D" on the back to mark them as premium. She gave me the right discount, so no issue, but she told me to go to guest services to get the APs marked. The next day, we had Plaza Inn character breakfast and the guy just scanned our APs and gave us the right discount; we asked him about the special marking and he didn't know anything about it. Guest services/city hall had never heard of it either.

Does anyone know anything about this? At this point I think the waitress was mistaken, there is no special marking for the premium passes, but I want to see if anyone else would know?

Yes there is a special marking with premium passes, it is a D. But I've never got a discount based upon a CM just looking at th card, they swipe it and then it applies the correct discount.....at least I think! my daughter has th deluxe and it does not have the marking.

When I upgraded my AP to premium they gave me a new card.

I renewed (premium staying premium) and since I did it in person and my card never scanned for the discount I asked for a new card. When it printed it was without the D, and the CM said they no longer include it, and they will scan/swipe the card and give the appropriate discount. The problem will come when it doesn't scan and they don't see the d so just assume lower levels. Just keep an eye out because I'm guessing it will happen again

We experienced the same problem your having when we upgraded our socal passes to the premium passes. Some places would give us the proper discount but quite a few others would not. It got old pretty quick and we went and got the passes with the D on the back and that solved all of the issues.

But I still always check to see if the discount is correct and never go to places like Gibson girl that do not honor the discount.

We have run into this issue randomly with our Premium AP. I think it was Village Haus they swiped our AP and it only gave the deluxe discount. I think it's happened once or twice but seems to be a glitch.

It probably didn't give the wrong discount when scanned. CMs tend to scan the AP once and if it doesn't work just manually hit the discount button. And after a few days in a pocket or a few more days in a wallet basically no AP scans anymore. I wonder how much Disney's really saving by not printing new passes every year. My guess is the end up replacing most APs within a few months of renewal because the thin plastic they're using just doesn't hold up.

When renewing I would also always check that your AP# remains the same. Perhaps if automatically renewing it does. We don't do that though, we buy parkhoppers in the summer and upgrade on our last day. This year we brought our old cards which they used to load the new passes, but the AP# changed - no one told us that. When we returned home I couldn't log in as an AP to buy halloween tix - fortunately I still had our blockout pass which did have the new AP# on it.

On top of that, the new number would not scan at the gates. The first time the lead just let us in. Of course the passes wouldn't give FP's since they hadn't been scanned. Two trips to city hall, one to the tix booth outside the gate, then being held at the gate again we were eventually given one day parkhoppers. The lead said the problem would resolve when our passes became unblocked. Of course that didn't happen. On our next trip it took a lead taking us to the tix booth himself to straighten it out there, with new passes being issued for the problem to be fixed. I'll always "forget" to bring my old passes in the future.
