AP or Package for WDW?

I've noticed alot of people are using AP for room discounts. How much are APs? Is it cheaper to do this than to buy one of the disney packages with room and tickets? We have not been to WDW since 19925 (before kids) so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before we go. I want this to be a great trip for all of us, big kids and little.
