I just got a premium AP last month, and I was checking out the discounts on Disney's website and it says:

Annual Passport Discounts

Annual Passholders can save up to 20% on select merchandise purchased at certain Disneyland Resort locations and up to 15% at select dining locations throughout Disneyland Resort. Also, use your Disneyland pass for the opportunity to receive discounts on stays at the Disneyland Resort Hotels, on guided tours and at select Downtown Disney District locations.

Premium Passholders receive the maximum merchandise and dining discounts. Please note that pass types are limited in quantity, and may not be available.

Exclusions and restrictions apply to discounts; see below and check location for details. Merchandise discounts will expire December 31, 2014.

I thought the discounts were all for the same term as the AP. Are they really expiring at the end of the year? The merchandise discounts factored heavily into my decision to get an AP. :(

From what I understand, historically, Disney has always extended the discount. It's been that way for the past few years that we've had an AP. No one can say for certain that it will extend past the end of the year, but based on past actions, the discount will likely continue.

Officially, the discount for premium APs is only 15%. A few years ago, Disney increased the discounts on all APs by 5% until December 31, whatever-year-that-was. This made the premium discount 20% --- until the end of that year. On January 1st, they extended it for another year.

Jump forward a few years...
The discount amounts have never returned to their "normal" amounts. Every year the terms of each AP has the date of December 31, whatever-year-it-currently-is as the expiration date of the discount.

Unless DL wants pass holders to buy even less merchandise I think they had better keep the discount.

Actually, it used to be that the premium AP had a 10% merchandise discount, and the other APs had no merchandise discount at all. Then in I think it was late 2009, probably partly due to the slow economy, Disney added special temporary-for-the-holidays 10% off merchandise discounts as a perk on the lower level APs. When they did that, they increased the premium AP discount to 20%. This temporary discount is always set to expire on December 31 but has been extended each year since it began. No one knows how long Disney will choose to offer the discount, so each year near the end of the year there is speculation and rumor about whether it will continue.

As far as I know, the dining discounts have never had an end date associated with them. They are 15% off for premium AP holders and 10% for all lower level APs.

Never mind, longtimedisneylurker worded it better and had the right year!!
