Is it worth getting an AP just fro the discounts? And if I buy it now will I get those rates for our May trip? Is it better then AAA rates? Any other perks?

Annual passes are good for one year. The AP is worth it imo if you plan on going several times to DL within the year, eat in the parks, stay onsite, buy souvenirs.
Whether you buy a basic, deluxe or premium also depends on how often you'll go and how much you'll spend.
Premium passes are the most convenient as there are no block out days, but there are also much more expensive.
AAA cards offer you discounts on hotels and restaurants.

Depends on what you mean by "those rates". If you mean the hotel rates in around $129-$149 a night- its hard to say. The AP rates vary from month to month depending on how busy the hotel is. If you mean the standard savings, which is 10% off food, and slightly reduced hotel rate, then yes.

AP rates are sometimes hit or miss. They may or may not be available for a particular day or days, and only become available a few months out. I had 5 nights booked at DLH with last summer's "4th night free" deal. Then started asking what the AP rate would be for our stay, and ended up booking that saving about $500 off what the regular rate would have been. At the time I purchased mine, it was only $70 more than a 3-day parkhopper.

Do you think if I called they would quote me an AP rate even though i don't have it yet , or do they ask for a # off of the Ap for proof? We may go twice this year so It is cheaper then a 3 day park hopper x 2 and I would not go during the black out times anyway.

I had been thinking of doing this also to save on food/purchases, but someone told me the blackout dates include every Saturday from something like February through September! Since we'd be spending a bit more money to convert a parkhopper to the deluxe AP, plus would need to spend $30 to get into DL on the blackout Saturday, it's probably not going to be worth it for us (because we've already paid for air/hotel, and would likely not be coming back within a year.)

We'll get a bit of a break in some locations due to AAA membership...

I have a premium pass and my kids have deluxe. I converted from hopper passes on the last day knowing we would be coming back. I didn't realize that the deluxe also include those Saturday block out days. So when we go in April we either have to forgo Saturday in the park (not likely) or I have to buy 2 block out days at $30 each.
Ouch!

I booked 2 AP reservations in November before getting our APs. They don't ask for any AP information, they just require you to have your AP when you check in. Hope that helps! I know that was a big help to us! I think the APs are excellent JUST for the hotel rates!! You ALWAYS get 10% off, and when they offer actual AP rates, even better!! Nothing better than getting a $200+ / night room for $89 or $129! I had always wanted to stay at the DLH and would never let myself spend that much money, but with the AP it has MORE than paid for itself just with 3 trips to the DLH with their AP rates.
