AP discounts. ID required?

Last April my son tried to use his at World of Disney and they would not let him because he didn’t have an ID. He was a bit crushed because he was paying for something himself. I thought it was rediculous that they were going to charge me for an adult annual pass and not let him use the discounts because he didn’t have an ID (he was 11). In any case he’s excited to have one this year and be able to use it. I have been asked for ID every single time I have used my AP for a discount.

for what it’s worth, I’ve had more issues over the years with the AP discount at World of Disney than any other retail location.
A few years ago they told me my then seasonal pass was not entitled to AP discount. I had to get a manager who “did me a favor this one time” and gave me the discount. It was completely ridiculous.

Always had to show id. My young daughter had no id with her (had school is but not on trip) and the lady at emporium wouldn’t let her make her little purchase without one. We will be getting a state id card for her before our next trip. It will be helpful for several reasons of which this is one.

Last month I was asked for my ID each time. The name was verified against my AP card.

I just went last week, there was only one time a cast member instantly gave me the discount without asking for ID. All other times it was asked and I was there was almost a whole week. That being said, if your daughter has a student ID perhaps she could make the purchases if they plan on sticking together.

I say that since whoever is making the purchase does have to be the one to present the AP and ID. So for example, he cannot be making the purchase and she be the one to give the AP and ID.

I've yet to be asked for ID; we've been sorta local AP's since August and have made ~25 purchases with the discount since. That said, it clearly depends on the CM there at the time.

Surely they've thought of someway to offer the discount to minors without ID? If they haven't, they should

I received the discounts at five TS restaurants and Mouse Gear in Epcot. While I was aware of the rule about showing ID and had my ID with me at all of these occasions, all I had to show was my AP card. In fact, at one of the restaurants, I told the CM as we were ordering that I had an AP and the discount was already applied when they brought out the check BEFORE I had even showed my AP card. I put the card in the folder along with my CC just in case they needed something from it for their records anyway.

This is the first year that my kids will be old enough to go into the parks on their own, but they aren’t old enough to have drivers licenses. It has been a few years since I have had an AP, but I seem to remember them asking for ID when I used it for discounts. I did call and ask Disney if the kids would need ID to take advantage of food and merchandise discounts and the CM said that he didn’t think they would, but I’m not sure that he was sure.

Has anyone had hands on experience with this? My daughter has a high school ID, but my son does not yet. Would a school ID be sufficient? The only government ID they have is their passports, but I don’t really want them carrying those around the parks.

Have some common sense! I had an AP and I had an ID but I would stand around and wait for them to get a manager who would then allow my DD to make her purchase. It was better once she had a school ID and then her drivers license but frankly, it STILL annoyed me that they would require ID from a freaking minor.

Agree, quite a few years ago my dd wanted to buy something for her sister using her own $ and her AP discount. I really didn't think anything of it until she called out to me as she was in the process of checking out. She was around 12/13 at the time and didn't have any id so they weren't letting her use the discount. I stepped in and tried to use my AP/ID and they said I couldn't use the discount to purchase an item for another guest! Yes a manager was called and the purchase was made but honestly if my dd hadn't had her heart set on this gift for her sister we wouldn't have bothered.
From then on we just made sure they brought their school id on vacation!

We got our son a state ID because there have been various situations in which he has been asked for ID but only had a school ID - some places would accept that when he explained that he doesn't have a driver's license yet, others wouldn't. In our state the process was very similar to getting a driver's license in terms of the items that were required to prove citizenship, residency, etc.

I forgot-there was just one time when I was specifically told that I didn't need to show ID along with my AP. That was in the Festival Center for the F&W when I was picking up my free button. I asked the lady if she needed to see ID along with my AP. She said "No, I don't think you'd bother to stand in line for this unless you were legitimate." I definitely got the impression that she was a person who formerly passed out the AP glasses, and was really embarrassed for us that Disney only gave us the "free gift" of a button this year.

My son is 14 and the one time he bought something with an AP discount, he just showed his AP card, no ID (He doesn't have one).

And yes, you can get the photo ID card from the DMV for pretty cheap, but doing so is a BIG hassle that we just haven't gotten around to dealing with yet. You need the long birth certificate, you need the social security card, you need a piece of mail, and you need to be willing to stand in line at DMV all day. CT sucks.

Disney says you need the ID. If you try to make a purchase without one, you run the risk that you will be denied. Disney reserves the right to do so. So, have an ID.
