AP blockout questions

Because you are not getting my point at ALL. I am NOT talking about locals that have a deluxe or a premium. I am talking about SO CAL ap's which make up the majority of local AP holders. They pay a LOT less for a so cal ap then people who have to buy a deluxe. They can also go to the parks a lot more. If they don't go this year they can go next year or whatever. My point is that people who are coming from a distance and paying airfare, hotel, etc and then can't get in. I DO plan on going early but had hoped to not have to get there at 7 a.m. if I am going to be there till midnight!

Now it seems we have to get there at the crack of dawn and sit there. We did not plan on getting to do much anyway but really didn't want to have to be there from opening to closing just to see the fireworks.

I KNEW it was going to be crazy and that is why we had hoped to go at 10 ore even noon if it was possible.

But because we DO have to buy the blackout we have to get there super early to avoid them selling out.

Yes I think everyone is entitled to go to the parks as many times as they want but when the locals who can go pretty much anytime they want crowd the place up so much that the out of towners can't go to me then yes it is dissapointing.

At this point we may not even do it. I have planned well in advance but NO I didn't know that the price of the blockout tickets went up. Last I heard they were 50 not 70!

It is really irrelevent because at these prices they are going to eliminate alot of out of towners.

Why?? Because this is not just another day in the park. This is NYE. The reason we are even having this discussion is because it is a very unique day. Just like people flock to Times Square in NY, people want to ring in the New Year at DLR. A local cannot come in March, October or any other day of the year and have the same experience. It is only one day a year and it shouldn't matter if you live in Anaheim, Portland, Austin or the UK. If you paid the money and have gotten there in time to get in the gate, you should be able to enjoy the special NYE festivities :thumbsup2

The SoCal passes are very heavily restricted, so they can't really go whenever they want, without paying for blockout passes. Do that a couple of times in a year, and you may as well have purchased a Deluxe or Premium. Your logic doesn't really hold up.

I don't think that anyone is more deserving of being able to go to the parks because of the distance they travel. Locals may be able to get to the parks more often, but they are also generally paying a premium to live in Southern California. I live close to the parks, and I've been a pass holder for close to 15 years, and I've had the Deluxe or the Premium ever since different passes became an option, and even I have been turned away from the parks on NYE when they were at capacity. If you want to go to a busy amusement park on a day that you know will be crowded, then plan accordingly, get there early, and don't expect to do a whole lot.

Also? People who buy the SoCal passes buy them for two reasons: they're cheap, and they don't want to go on crowded days anyway. SoCal passholders aren't going to be coming to the park in droves on NYE so that they can spend $70 to not be able to go on any rides or do anything all day. They're going to be staying far away.

I agree.

I have a question about this crazy day. I have a deluxe pass and a reservation at Club 33 on NYE. I plan on getting there early in the morning to buy a blockout ticket, but what if for some reason I couldn't get one? If I explain that I have a reservation, would they then sell me a ticket to get in? I thought this was going to be really exciting being in the park on NYE...but now I'm starting to wonder!:worried:

Are you chummy with the person that made you the reservation? First things first, could they give you one of their 50 free tickets that they get per year? If not, so long as you get there early in the morning you should be ok getting in, but again, make sure you're there early.

I completely thought about this when I saw your post on another thread about being at Club 33 on NYE. If you only have a reservation and not a reservation plus ticket, you must get entry into the Park on your own (as I know you know). So, therefore, you must find a way into the Park to be able to get into Club 33. If they stop selling tickets and you don't have one, you have no way into the Park and they will not let you in just because you have a Club 33 reservation (because you do not have to accompanying ticket). If they are not admitting people due to capacity, you will not be admitted. :( If they stop selling tickets and you don't have one, you have no way into the Park and they will not let you in just because you have a Club 33 reservation (because you do not havo accompanying ticket).

So, not only do you want to make sure you GET in, but if I were you, I would STAY in if you want to be sure to eat at Club 33 on NYE. :goodvibes

Because you are not getting my point at ALL
Okay, I have been working hard to understand your view on this. Here's the problem:
I am NOT talking about locals that have a deluxe or a premium. I am talking about SO CAL ap's which make up the majority of local AP holders. They pay a LOT less for a so cal ap then people who have to buy a deluxe. They can also go to the parks a lot more. If they don't go this year they can go next year or whatever.
1. There is no official Disney data that I am aware of that states that So Cal passes make up the majority, but even if they do, that really isn't relevant to what they are entitled to as Disney fans.
2. Yes, they pay less than holders of other AP-types BUT they are NOT able to go to the Parks a lot more.
- Deluxe AP holders CAN enter the Parks 315 days a year.
- So Cal AP holders CAN enter the Parks 215 days a year.
- So Cal Select AP holders CAN enter the Parks only 170 days a year.
3. If they don't go this year, they cannot go next year unless they buy another pass next year.

Just because someone lives in Southern CA and has a So. Cal. pass does not mean that they don't have responsibilities, a job, school, a family, and a million other things that keeps them from living at Disneyland as we all wish we could. ;) But using that logic, local Deluxe passholders can go 315 days a year and local Premium passholders can go 365 days a year. But they won't. Just as So Cal AP holders won't go 170 or 215 days/year.

My point is that people who are coming from a distance and paying airfare, hotel, etc and then can't get in....
And this is my major disagreement with your view (which, yes, you are completely entitled to, we are just having a discussion :goodvibes). Yes, you are paying airfare. It is not going to Disney. Yes, you are paying hotel. It is also not going to Disney (as you stated earlier that you are staying off-site). So, why does Disney have any extra incentive to "hold" a spot for a similar guest? You are ALLOWED to use your pass 315 times/year. How many times you actually use it is up to you. You ARE indeed spending a lot of money to come down, but NONE of it is going to Disney (hotel, airfare, etc...).

Aos, where do you draw the line? Let's say only "out of town" passholders are allowed in. So, we have eliminated all So. Cal. AP holders. What about No. Cal? Nevada? Arizona? New Mexico? Mississippi? New York? England? Where is the dividing line of those who have the right to buy AP blockout passes that allows them to go into the Park on NYE? There's just no fair way to do it with your approach. The only fair way is first-come-first-serve. If you have a valid ticket (AP, blockout ticket, daily ticket) and are in before the fire marshall cuts it off, you are in. How else could it fairly be done? I am honestly asking. it is fair. It is equitable. Everyone knows that they have to get in before the lock falls.

Now it seems we have to get there at the crack of dawn and sit there. We did not plan on getting to do much anyway but really didn't want to have to be there from opening to closing just to see the fireworks.
Now please do not misunderstand me. I COMPLETELY understand your thoughts on this part. No one really wants to get to a NYE celebration at 10am (not a set time, btw, just one that someone here on DIS through out there). VERY FEW locals that I know want to spend 15 hours at Disneyland. Remember, they are not on vacation. They are stepping out of "real life" for a day to do so, having to deal with childcare, work, who-knows-what-else. But if you want to be in DL at midnight on NYE, that's how it works.

We did it once. We will never do it again. Main Street at midnight was so tight with shoulder to shoulder people that you literally could not move. We were tired. Our feet hurt. We had both worked the day before. I had to work the next day. We had to spend over two hours to get out of the Park and get to our car. We had to drive home at 3am (started to leave the Park very shortly after midnight). DH, almost 10 years later, still tonight said that he will never ever do it again. But we did it once. And we were in the Park by noon. Just to make sure we could do it. Once. It's not easy on anyone. But hopefully, you want to do it bad enough and you enjoy it. Otherwise, no, it's not worth it.

Yes I think everyone is entitled to go to the parks as many times as they want but when the locals who can go pretty much anytime they want crowd the place up so much that the out of towners can't go to me then yes it is dissapointing.
I can see how the thought of not being able to get in can be disappointing. However, hopefully, you can see that it is not an issue of So Cal AP holders vs everyone else or local AP holders vs. out-of-towners, but each person for themselves, using the advantages that you have going for you (valid AP on that day, staying onsite, not leaving once inside) to hope for the best day you can have.

At this point we may not even do it. I have planned well in advance but NO I didn't know that the price of the blockout tickets went up. Last I heard they were 50 not 70!
I say this part with true, genuine heartfelt compassion. If this is THAT important to you. If it's what you want to do for your daughter for her birthday. If everything else about it "works" for you, don't let $20 x ____ be the thing that stops you. You can make that up by sharing a few meals, buying a less expensive souvenir, i-don'-know-your-world-but-cutting-somewhere. It's not enough to be a deal-breaker if this is your dream trip.

It is really irrelevent because at these prices they are going to eliminate alot of out of towners.
As well as people in So Cal who are watching money, as well.

I hope you can see what I am trying to convey. I understand your view and I appreciate you sharing it. I hope you are able to have a celebration for your daughter's birthday that she enjoy, wherever and whatever that may be. :wizard:

Kelly, I'm really sorry that you didn't know about the price change for the passes.

However, Im scratching my head as I read what you are saying, because you live SO much closer than I do, can drive or fly there SO much quicker than I can and possibly at a lesser cost, AND you have the right to use the payment plan!

My version of a payment plan is to save each month for a year BEFORE I can buy the AP and use it. You get to pay and use it in the same year. This is a huge benefit, that most people do not have, and I hope you can come to realize it.

Now, I can have that right to do that at Universal Florida for our APs, but not at DLR or WDW, as their payment plans are only within the actual states.

I definitely agree that the APs are getting out of the range of many. I'm at renewal time, and due to the wording of the postcard I got today I got excited that maybe I could renew mine. But it was just terrible wording, and it's just not going to happen. Very painful. I might have to start the non-Californian's version of a payment plan for the future, it that means another Year Of APs is a year away for me.

For anyone wanting to go on NYE, who wants to be there as the clock ticks down, be at the gate before it opens, DO NOT LEAVE, and try to have fun in the level of crowds that makes experienced CMs literally shudder while telling you NOT to go on NYE.. If you or your family members cannot do this, NYE is something you really shouldn't do. It's not something we can do, so we won't be doing it. Maybe DS will get old enough while we are still young enough that we'll be able to do a proper NYE somewhere, but I'm not betting on it.

Noticed this info in the AP FAQ that discusses block out days. Might help to know in advance.

Annual Passholders must present their valid Annual Passport and valid Blockout Day ticket to be admitted into Disneyland Resort on a Blockout Day. If you have purchased the parking benefit, it is valid on Blockout Days.
The parking benefit is valid on all days except July 4 and December 31. Prices are subject to change without notice. There are no refunds and pro-rated discounts.

Molly I get what you are saying but still driving there which is what we are doing this particular time still takes 8 hours and costs money for gas which I am sure you know has gone up recently. Just because we live in Nor Cal doesn't change the fact that we can go whenever we want to. And I don't know about air. I have been hearing some of the divas talking about getting tickets for March for 150 rt from places like Washington/Oregon etc and yet eventhough I live "closer" it is NOT cheaper. THE cheapest flight we can get on Southwest is 200 per person. That is why we are not flying now and only mom and I are going to be able to fly in march for the ladies trip which by the way we have considered cancelling numerous times due to costs. The rest of my family (the girls and my ex) have to drive because we can't afford for all of us to fly. And the ONLY reason we decided to go is because my daughter is in a cheer comp that weekend so since we have to be there anyway we are going to go to a few of the ladies trip stuff.

And frankly I see what all of you are trying to say and I never once said that I didn't think locals or anyone else should get in. What I WAS trying to point out is that when they DID start cutting back that the local so cals should be the first ones and then up in a tier system. I get that they may not be able to come and if they made the plans to go and on and on. I am just saying that with your logic if it is closer for me to go who lives 500 miles away it is DEF closer for those that live right there or within an hour or so drive. If they had made plans to go on NYE and for some reason the weather was bad or it was going to be too busy they could just say ah will skip it and do it next year. Whereas someone who has already spent the money to come down from out of town has no choice. You either go or you miss out.

Honestly I never really wanted to do this. I knew what everyone said and I knew it was going to be crowded but because my daughter's birthday is on NYE she has always felt slighted. She DEF gets less gifts then she would if her birthday were say in June because everyone is broke from xmas and uses the excuse that you just got stuff last week. She is never in school on her birthday which may seem awesome to you and me but to kids they like to be there to bring treats and celebrate with their friends. I have always had trouble getting kids to come to her parties because it is so close to the holidays and on and on. So I told her that a couple times on special birthdays we would do something really special. THIS was the plan for her 13th since she is becoming a teen. But like I said between the price increases, the fact that we have to get there at the crack of dawn to make sure we can even get in and all the rest I am wishing now I had never agreed to it. This is all about her and what she wants not what I want. And this is a one time thing. We are doing it this one time and good or bad we will NOT be doing it again. That is why I would be extremely dissapointed after all the planning and her hopes that it didn't happen.

We have discussed changing our plans but nothing else is working out and everything else is even MORE expensive since we are down to 30 days so I guess we are just going to have to go when it opens and hope for the best.

Kelmac, I don't have AP's and I live south of you it sounds like, we live in Salinas. We always drive, and probably would still living 500 miles away too. JUST GO! Have fun, your daughter is going to remember this and have a great time. I had friends who have gone and they had a great time. Yes you might have to get there earlier, but that's okay! Have a great time and Happy Early Birthday to your daughter!

Just a gentle thought... Kelly, it sounds like you might want to focus on the fact that you're going to Disneyland! It will be crowded, but FUN! Do the best you can, let go, and let your daughter have a wonderful time on her 13th birthday!

Doesn't someone with a birthday get a birthday button? Imagine all the treats she will get on top of it being a special NYE trip! She will feel so great!

You can do this! Think FUN! Yay! :goodvibes

I don't really want to get into a debate, but I'm curious where in NorCal you are flying out of? I live in NorCal and can get RT flights on Southwest for $69/each way if booked when they open up booking. We almost always get that rate flying out of Sac into SNA, but they also have it out of SFO & OAK. Just a heads up.

I can honestly say that I have never seen flights at $69 each way, besides, if you have to fly 4 people at $69 each way that's still $500+ and it's not that $$$$ if you just drive it.
Kelly, I hear you on the birthday thing, DD12 turns 13 on Dec 15th, I try really hard to make sure she gets a birthday party and then Christmas is separate, I also have DBF's birthday on 1-7 so I get hit with it all really close together. lol Just go, go early early early, get your block out passes and wait forever. LOL But most of all, enjoy yourselves, because YOU deserve it. :)

Here is my concern... You are not going to have a good time. Why? You have already set yourself up with a negative attitude. You are going to be resentful of the locals who you feel are going to be flooding the park. Lines will be long. Will your daughter enjoy this? Or will she feel "All my birthday did was make everyone upset.."

I love NYE. I go every year. I am an annual passholder. I spend a lot of money on our trip also. Between the cost of driving down, staying in a room for 12 nights, food, etc... I will spend more than you. Does that mean my trip is more valuable than yours? No. Same with a local. Their trips are JUST as important to them as yours is to you.

I know I will need to be in the park fairly early and plan to stay IN the park. I know we won't be riding many rides, so we will bring cards and stake out a table and relax and enjoy the sites. It will be a GREAT day. Enjoy it for what it is.

We fly out of sac and fly into Orange county or San Diego and it is usually 69 bucks each way. Were doing it again Dec 19th. Southwest changes the rates so often so you really have to watch for sales and book ahead.

I didn't even look for December because orig my ex and my father were going to go so we had always planned to drive but I DO know that I haven't seen 69 in forever. I remember times when it was as low as 29 or 39 but I haven't seen that in a few years.

We are flying down in March on a Thurs morning and the cheapest I could get was 95 going and coming back on the latest flight on sunday was 107. So with tax etc it came to 199.

And that is for a weekend in March when nothing is really going on.

Sure if the fares were cheaper etc but everything has gone up.

I am done with this conversation. I was just pointing out a fact that I have heard plenty of people on here complaining about (prices, crowds etc). I don't want to debate it anymore.

We tried to find another place to go and it is even MORE expensive. We already have our hotel booked and we are doing OTHER things then just going to disney the week we will be there. I DO plan to go and and we will do our best.

If we can't get in so be it. We will hang out in Downtown Disney.

Thanks Kerri and to those who said to have a good trip. For the rest I am done discussing it.

I know it doesn't matter for this trip because it's approaching too quickly, but I know that they have $69 rates out of Sacramento to SNA because we just flew on them over the the Thanksgiving holiday. Granted the trip was booked early, but they are out there. I also know Virgin America has great rates from SFO to one of the LA area airports.

I never said it was cheaper than driving, and as a matter of fact this last trip was the only time we've flown in 5 years, but there are comparable rates to what she is seeing from the Pacific NW areas.

ETA: I have researched flights for all of our trips and seen the $69/each way rate a lot. It's still more affordable for us to drive as a family of 6.
