...on January 18th that would fill up the values or make them crazy? We are only staying one night as we pass through-no parks- so I thought a value would be best but want to avoid mobs and get some sleep!

I don't think there's anything going on. I think WDW doesn't want to sell you a room for just the one night. If I put in January 17-19 every Value has multiple room categories available.

THIS

Seeing it more and more, they want bigger blocks of time commitments so they don't have those single, double nights empty hoping someone like OP will show up and book.

When is Martin Luther King weekend?

Have you considered checking availability at the Swan/Dolphin? Sometimes they have really good deals.

Since Martin Luther king day is on the 16th, people may be taking off the week - or a few days after...

If you want to avoid mobs and get sleep, a WDW value is not really a good choice IMHO, particularly as you don't need any onsite perks for your trip. Consider looking into a Disney Springs hotel or something else offsite. You will get a much better value for your money offsite.

There is a gymnastics competition at WDW that weekend from 18-22 that has reduced bookings available for pop (the reason I'm going down) but even with that when I booked my rooms there was a ton of availability. If you don't want to be around a ton of kids that weekend though I would say maybe avoid pop

I agree.
Plenty others or condos to pick from.

I saw availability- just saw someplace else that there may be cheer kids or other groups and didn't know how to check on it. Was thinking of using ME to get us there, then we will be renting a car the next morning and leaving Disney area. Bad idea? We are having dinner at our fav place- Boma. I'm not a fan of condos and the AS hotels were less than $100. I felt safe there with just me and kids. So I should look elsewhere? Didn't want to drive from airport- I get a little nervous when I don't know where I am!

Knowing those details now, I think you've made a good choice.

I agree with CarolynFH. When you factor in transportation costs from MCO to any hotel in the Orlando area, a WDW value WITH transportation from the airport (MDE), is a pretty good value. I think I would book it.

Thanks- the DME is a great perk. It has definitely been a deciding factor for us several times. One of the shuttles we looked at ( and was recommended by family in Fla) was $50 person, each way. Since we have a long travel day- I decided to have a little Disney fix and dinner, then get up and go the next morning ( hopefully) refreshed.
Is there someplace to see if there are big events/bookings?

Like I said earlier, you are not having issues with getting a WDW room for only the 18th because of any big group or big happening at WDW. It is 100% because WDW doesn't want to sell you a Value room for a single night. They will gladly sell you a Value room for 2 nights or longer.

I always check for any big sports/cheer competitions on the ESPN Wide World Of Sports website. https://www.espnwwos.com/events/

I'm not having trouble with availability at all. There are rooms available at all of the values. Thanks for the suggestion of checking ESPN- thats what I've been looking for.
