Anything behind name "687"?

I noticed that, according to their website, DCL changed the name of the sports pub on the Dream. Before this pub was called Metro Pub (even listed so on the pdf deck plan I have). Now the website is calling it 687. I'm assuming that this is another one of those trivia things -- that the name/number has some meaning significant to Disney that I'm missing. Anyone know?

The hull number (or yard number) of the Disney Dream is 687. I assume that's where the name "687" for sports lounge on the Disney Dream came from.

The number of the Disney Fantasy is 688.

The shipyard for both ships is Meyer Werft of Papenburg, Germany.

We were on the EBTA in April. There was a presentation on the Dream by one of the WD Imagineers. He said the Dream is being built of "blocks" like a Lego project. He said that the sports bar is located in block #687 and that is why they named it 687.

Perhaps there are other people who were at the presentation who can confirm that my memory is correct.

Thanks for the information! I just knew there had to be a story behind it :thumbsup2

Ahhh, but which "story" is true?

Although modern cruise ships use modular construction, the story that the lounge is somehow named after modular block #687 seems unlikely -- especially because numerous sources identify the shipbuilder's number for the Disney Dream to be 687 or S.687 (called the hull number, yard number, or keel number).

The shipbuilder, in this case Meyer Werft, assigns a unique number to each shipbuilding project. The new Celebrity Eclipse also built by Meyer Werft, is S.677. The Disney Fantasy is S.688.

Through a Google search, I found that MousePlanet recently had this item:

On board, the Metro Pub has been renamed 687, in honor of the Disney Dream (687 is the keel number of the Dream at the Meyer Werft shipyard).

I remembered that story but couldn't remember where I heard it from so didn't want to contradict anyone. But I was at that presentation and that is exactly what Gary Landrum said.

Yeah I remember him saying that as well

I have no doubt that he said that.

However, I would not be surprised if his script was written by someone who slightly misunderstood the source of the number 687.

Before the two new Disney ships even had names, they were already known as 687 and 688 (or S.687 and S.688). Here's the announcement of the order, from the shipyard's own website:

If the sports lounge on the Disney Fantasy is called 688, it should put other theories to rest.

Horace, I don't think anyone is trying to pick an argument with you...

It seems that there are two plausible answers to the OP's question. Both seem extremely likely, and one comes directly from an imagineer. Perhaps they're both true. Maybe the numbering is simply coincidence. Whatever the case, does it truly matter now that we know there is a reasoning behind it?

Okay not trying to be critical here, but....I think the name, and even the reasoning for the name is totally lame.

There are several other bars and lounges with no real "theme" at all, so why not name one of those, "Bon Voyage" for example 687? It seems to me like a sports pub should have an actual sports-themed name.

Okay, but even if they wanted to pay homage to the shipyard or whatever, that's fine. But, isn't there some other creative name they could come up with?

I digress.

It may just be another Disney secret like why the exclusive Club 33 at Disneyland is named Club 33.
Nobody has solved that and it's been 55 years.

Here's some speculation from snopes.com:
Various origins are claimed for the name Club 33 — everything from the official explanation that the club was named after its 33 Royal Street address to the notion that Walt picked the name simply because he liked the way the number '33' looked to the claim that the club was named in honor of Disneyland's original thirty-three participants (park sponsors and lessees).

My own guess is the second one--that Walt liked how the numbers looked.

(Pictures of the inside of the club can also be found at the above link)

Yes, those rumors are mentioned in many Disney books.

Also, according to previous reports the dream is being built in 83 blocks, nowhere near 687 blocks - http://home.disney.go.com/foryou/disneyfans/insider/article/?date=20100223

Sports Pub is called O'Gills Pub on the Fantasy but I have also read that the Dream Keel # is 687 so that is what I am going with!
