We just got a note home from the school board, we have an appoitment to see her dr, but was wondering everyone's expereinces?

She had tubes at 18 months but they are long gone and the ear infections went with them, thankfully.

My DS did. He failed many hearing tests. He also had plugs put in at a young age. For him, it was something he finally outgrew but he had an ear wax build up problem. I had to learn when and how often to clean his ears so it wouldn't affect him as much. But like I said, he eventually outgrew it.

Best of luck.

Yes, my 9yo did. She ended up getting ear tubes in August 07. She only needed them in one ear and it fell out a year later.

I failed it as a child because I had frequent infections as a baby and toddler that later lead to hearing loss in both ears. I wear a hearing aid in my left ear. My parents knew what to do when the notes came home and my advice would be go to the doctor and if more treatments are needed or something is diagonsed be prepared but don't panic. I wasn't diagonsed with hearing loss unitl I was 8 and my parents panicked too much. How old is your daughter? I hope everything goes well for her and let us know how it turns out.

My kids have not, but I did in fourth grade! I have no idea why, but I was very embarrassed and didn't want anyone to know. It must have been an age thing.

Upon a further test, I was fine. The doctor said I probably had a cold that day.

I've had two kids fail it for no apparent reason in kindergarten. Both of them are types that get nervous/excited about new situations. I think in both cases they just got overexcited about the contraption and person administering the test and didn't hear the directions well enough or weren't focused enough to hear the quiet sounds. In both cases, they passed the retest and we didn't even go to the dr. They've passed every test since, I think because they know what to do and it's not so strange. I wouldn't panic on the first failed round.

I teach Prek/K and when I took my K's in to be tested, it was in the library, with the 9 other K's sitting(supposed to be in silence, but you know 5 year olds) a little ways over and others coming in and out of the library. I don't know how any of them passed. I would have your child tested at her pediatrician's office before you go off to do a real hearing test. It would be much more accurate IMO.

My DD failed in preschool and they had us make an appointment for her at an otolaryngologist (sp?). I am so glad we did. She has a mid-range bilateral hearing loss that can not be corrected with hearing aids due to where the loss is. She had learned to compensate so well that no one really knew. We just thought she was a little ditzy.

I would say something like - You need to wait while I put the cheese away. She would look at me and say, "Why do you need to weigh the cheese?" She was smart enough and could hear and lip read enough that she could get by though usually with some misunderstanding.

DD failed her first hearing screening as a baby but passed the second time. Then they detected this. Hers is genetic. She had one ear infection so far and she is almost 9. For her first three years of school she went to a school that taught sign language and catered to deaf and hard of hearing students teaching them how to advocate for themselves. She is now in a regular classroom and is a great advocate for herself.

If they suggest an appointment or if you don't feel completely satisfied ask for one to reassure yourself.

Good luck.

Confession: I used to give hearing tests to preschoolers. I was really worried about this one little guy because he just couldn't hear anything. I referred him to the next level of school testing. A few minutes later, I realized that my machine had been unplugged!:scared1:

My oldest failed the hearing test at school and did fine in the doctor's office. My youngest passed the test but failed the one at the doctor's office and ended up with tubes. So, I wouldn't rely on the school test to tell you much of anything.
