anyone worried about swine flu?

Cautious...Not freaked yet. I take it seriously...I just hope it turns out to be not as bad as they all fear.

I'm curious why people would cancel trips to the US. Is it that you feel safer in Canada or because if you're home, you're not going to leave your house?

When this first started to spread, Canada had more cases of it than the US. Now things may have changed, but they obviously have more people. We (Nova Scotia) had 4 of the first confirmed cases. So I think if anybody thinks they're safer here than they are there, maybe has a false sense of security.

Now, you wouldn't get me going to Mexico. I am curious though why it seems to be killing Mexicans but is only mild in the US and Canada. Is it something that is more severe to certain ethnic groups?

We just got back from Dis last night and there was a guy who had on a surgical mask, that was a little creepy let me tell you. The airline attendant told us if he was "really sick they wouldnt let him on the plane" not overally reassuring..lol

I am surprised that people think this is media hype. It is the World Health Organization that has raised the pandemic level to 5 out of 6 not the media.

Yes, the flu kills many people every year but not many young healthy adults. Mostly people with immune problems to begin with or the elderly.

The 1918 pandemic killed 50 million people. My great grandparents were among them. Most of the victims were young healthy adults. It started off slowly but by the following Fall it really hit the world hard.

No I am not panicing but I am taking it seriously.

I agree and people should take it seriously......the best case scenario is it wont be that bad but no one knows the worst case ..............

For myself, I guess I am just thinking that going to a known hot-spot and it's the getting there on the plane sitting with who knows who or how many might have been exposed. A great little petri dish if you ask me. It might well be here too, but I an also use common sense here as well.

I am in the Annapolis Valley close to the 4 first confirmed cases in Canada.....I do not feel secure

IMHO travelling outside Canada bothers me even more because the population of the US & many countries are waaay higher than Canada, the cities and attractions are highly populated, more Mexicans go to the US than here............

If People want to go to these places fine but dont bring the virus back to us who make the decisions not to go.

This is my opinion

I think it's killing more mexicans because their air quality is so horrible and their standard of living isn't great. My guess is that they were physically weaker going into it due to the living conditions they deal with, and then they may not have access to health care if they do get sick. But who knows, maybe they've just had enough cases that they are seeing the deaths...regular flu kills people every year but A LOT of people get it without dying....so just the numbers of people sick in Mexico would lead to deaths anyways since they seem to have a lot of cases. I also think their numbers are way way off. If there were only 1000 people sick in mexico there wouldn't be so many tourists coming home with it, did those 1000 people go visit all the coastal tourist areas?

Well, here are a few reasons that people might cancel trips or be leary of travel at this particular time.

1. Who wants to be in another country and come down with this flu? I'd much rather be in my own place with this illness. I would want my own doctor looking after me and my family than some unknown doctor at some clinic that my insurance company tells me I have to go to.

2. What if they decide to quarantine my kids or my husband or myself? We do not know the reaction of doctors, borders, etc. if this hits the way WHO thinks it might. I'd rather be quarantined in my own home.

3. Airplanes are a cesspool of germs for many reasons.

Like I said in a previous post I am still travelling this weekend for two weeks but if I could change it I would and I certainly won't be booking a trip in the next while until I know things have settled down.

As a side note I'm a teacher in Eastern Ontario, our board plans to close the schools if it becomes a "6", I'm not sure what would make it change from a 5 to a 6, but it seems a bit surreal

During the day I'm able to convince myself that we will be fine:thumbsup2 At night I am tossing and turning with worry.:sad2: We are a pretty healthy bunch generally and I know we could get treatment if needed but... being stuck in a hotel room sick and far from home. I would be kicking myself for not canceling:sick:I sure hope this tapers off soon.
