I am a stay at home mom to 4 wonderful children. I love my job, and hope to stay at home as long as I can. Before we had children, I was a Learning Disabilities teacher. I only worked in the school system for a very short time (1 1/2 years) before our daughter came along. During my teaching career, I was so stressed and really did not enjoy my job! I do not want to go back to this job. I am thinking of trying a stay at home business (Discount Bridal Service, Pampered Chef....) in the future. Do an of you have this type of business? Does it really pay to do this? Are you still able to be at home for your kids when they need you? What are the benefits vs. the negatives?? Any info you can provide would be helpful. Thanks so much!

I look forward to reading the replies, too :)

I do a few things from home. I buy then resell excellent condition brand name kids clothing on eBay. I actually started a business around this but we are waiting on a programmer who is dragging his feet!

I do logo & template design for businesses and eBay sellers. I really enjoy this, especially for eBay sellers as they usually want something fun and whimsical.

I have never tried Pampered Chef or any other sales position because I'm not a very good sales person. I would feel ridiculous holding parties. I already feel bad sending a client an invoice and I know I couldn't handle mass sales.

I think if you look at your talents and what you enjoy, you can always find something of your own to do.

There are moms on eBay currently making a fortune doing custom made hair accessories, jewelry, clothing, etc. on eBay. If you have any sort of crafty talent (I wish I did) like sewing etc. you could look into that...some examples follow..

Look at the prices these go for or went for. There are lots of moms that LOVE this type of stuff. If you search Boutique or Chenille you can get a lot of returns on what is out there.

If this isn't for you, hopefully some mom out there can sew. I sure wish I could! ;)

I think the Internet is an amazing resource for entrepreneurial moms out there.

I'm in direct sales. I'm a Close To My Heart consultant (formerly known as D.O.T.S.). It's a rubber stamping and scrapbooking company. I love it. Lets me stay home and make enough money to pay a few bills each month.

Direct sales is great if you stick with it. I used to be with another direct sales company too, but quit that because the competition was everywhere (too many consultants).

Thanks Bridget,

I just got a sewing machine last Christmas, however, I am not that good yet! I can not believe what those overalls were getting on e-bay! I do not think that I would dress my little girl in anything that cost over $150!! Anyone else have a home business??:D :D

I have a friend that sells Pampered Chef. She does very well with it. She left her H a few months ago (long story) and is supporting herself and 2 daughters pretty well on what she makes (though she doesn't have any house payment) She and her DD's just went on a cruise to Alaska that she earned from high sales.

Melinda

thanks Melrosgirl and Piglet!

I will have to continue to look into this! Any more info, let me know.

I am going to become a Pampered Chef consultant in Sept ! I am looking forward to this very much. I like to cook so this seems to be a good way for me to make extra . I work full time but am a single mom so any extra pennies are a great way to save for - Christmas, Birthdays, a New Living Room set and my Disney trip .. and I am hoping to get into our school system a full time year round secretarial position 38 hrs wkly during the school year and 30 hrs during summer and have enough sales to keep afloat during summer I have also done Avon before and am thinking I may do that again as well. we were just talking about this the other day look ofr the post that says something like "Is anyone familiar with Tastefully Simple" should be about 4 or 5 pages back by now.

I did At home America for awhile and I liked it but it just wasnt the right thing for me I guess.
Tastefully Simple would be good because there arent a lot of people doing it right now. I thought about PC because I love their products but there are SO many reps in my area it just doesnt make any sense at all.

I also like " Home and Garden Party"

In the TS thread I posted a bunch of websites to help with decisions and supplies.

Good Luck in whatever you decide!

Hi , I have done a search and can't get the info to display on tastefully simple ? its just a blank tan page ?? Hum I would like to know more Michelle

Hi,

I just signed up to be a Time to Celebrate Consultant for Dept. 56. This is a brand new division in their company, if any of you collect villages or like any of their other decorating things this is a great oppertunity to start at the ground floor. There are no other consultants in my city and since I love dept 56 and collecting I am very excited to start. Oh and speaking of ebay even though I can not sell on there one of our halloween houses sold for 4 times as much as in the catalogue. People do not know where to buy them and they are paying a lot for them on ebay.

Thanks it finally came up - just running slowly - there are only 4 consultants in my state ! maybe I should have tried that instead of Pampered chef.. Oh well
