I have been thinking of changing careers for a while now. Progressive currently has a claims adjuster trainee position available in my area. Does anyone work for them? Use to work for them? Thoughts or comments please.

TIA

I bet there will be less spitting and cussing than at your current job. ;)

I never worked for them, but they're my insurance company. I love them. Everyone is so nice. I've always had a great experience (only had 1 actual accident, but DH hit 2 deer, and we've had multiple windshields replaced).

:thumbsup2

DH worked for them years ago... (at least 10-12 years ago). Back then, they were based in Ohio. (Mayfield Heights I think?)

They were very controlling. DH had over 10 years experience doing what he was hired to do and they seemed to want to hold eveyrone's hand and consequently DH was bored to death.

He found another job quickly.

:lmao: I'm not too concerned about the cussing, but the spitting and the aggression is what I am trying to get away from. I had two too many blood exposures last year.

DH doesn't work for them, but he has worked with several people who do. They've all said negative things about their jobs, apparently they are very hard to work for. Very difficult to please.

I'm a little surprised about the negative Progressive experiences. Since I live in Northeast Ohio (Progressive headquarters are still in Mayfield Village), everyone I know works for Progressive, worked for Progressive or has family that works for Progressive. My mom has worked there for over 20 years, and my brother and his wife have both been there for around 15 years. They all have pretty positive things to say about it. There are complaints of course but usually about crazy coworkers not about the company itself. I've been to several of the offices to visit over the years and it always seemed like a really layed back and relaxed atmosphere.

I worked for them years ago. They are very controlling, monitor calls and bathroom breaks. Monitor when you get back from lunch and every minute needed to be accounted for. And if you're looking into claims adjusting, hold on to your seat. You'll be in one of the most highly hated positions that's out there. I did it (claims adjusting at Travelers) for 5 solid years and that was enough for a lifetime. If you think your blood pressure is high now, go through training and work at it for a few months and take your BP then. No one is ever happy with decisions you make and you'll have more arguments and get cursed at more than a trucker.

Be forewarned, you'll have to obtain an adjusters license while training and that is very stressful as well. Classroom hours and then a state exam. FUN!

Progressive DOES have great health insurance and profit sharing. I will give them that much.

My best friend works for them and is, in general, happy there. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me and I can ask her for you.

Thanks for the warning. I actually work really well under that kind of stress. I can handle people being angry at me, not liking me, and generally being hateful. I deal with that type of stress on a daily basis. I currently work with at-risk and high need kids, most of whom have behavior disorders. They create situations that result in people getting hurt and staff having to put hands on. I am not sure I can really do it for much longer.

I just found out that the 3 (Yes, only three) people in my position have the highest injury rate in my whole agency with over 200+ employees. I fill out injury reports for myself very regularly. I am just tired of being hurt and/or attacked at work. The other I can deal with.

Back then, they were based in Ohio. (Mayfield Heights I think?)

They still are.

They were very controlling.

Again, they still are. And demanding as well. A friend of mine worked there for like 3 months in their claims processing department. He said the "quotas" they had to meet each day were killing him -- they expected 15 hours of work done in 8 hours. He ended up working the 15 hours a day (naturally, he was salaried) just to keep up and not get fired. Eventually, he just quit and said forget it.

My brother worked for them as an adjuster. He quit because claims he thought were valid kept getting denied.

From what I have always heard from other adjusters at other companies, most companies including progressive, expect adjusters to be able to handle a high claim volume and maintain high quality files. Hey - you asked. I wasn't saying you couldn't handle it but I've been there, done that and it was a stressful and miserable job. You won't meet many auto adjusters who say they like their jobs.

I appreciate all input and I did ask. Thanks.

I was a claims adjuster for Progressive in RI and then for Liberty Mutual in IL. I LOVED being a claims adjuster.

I work well in a controlled enviroment, knowing what is expected of me. Disneyworld is very similar in that respect.

I am sure it really depends on your office in regards to how much you are watched vs. how much you are trusted. In any large company you will find that with vary with different offices.

They do monitor your phone. You are expected to be available to take calls when at your desk. Again, depends on the office on how vigilant they are about your time off and on the phone, your breaks and lunch. The office I worked in was great. They trusted us and we proved we could be trusted.

When I first started working there we were trained to handle the claims completely. By that I mean we actually were trained to appraise vehicles as well as Bodily Injury claims. We would have to leave the office to appraise vehicles and meet with customers. We would also do all the investigation regarding fault.

When I left the office they had seperated the department up in to adjusters that only did the Bodily Injury claims and adjusters that only did Physical Damage claims (meaning no injury.)

Now the company also has the drive in claims offices that have the adjusters onsite. My best guess, since those were after I was there, is that there is an adjuster off site that actually does the investigation of the claim and the appraiser at the drive in office does the appraisal of the damage and forwards it to the actual adjuster. In other words the guys at the drive in office are mostly just physical damage appraisers. I could be mistaken, that is just my best guess at this time.

I LOVED the job and I loved working for Progressive. The only reason I left was that we moved 1/2 way across the country and at the time the local office did not have any openings.

The training that Progressive does is very extensive and thorough. When I was there we did in office training and then went to Arizona for two weeks for basic adjuster training, then home for two weeks, then back to Arizona for two weeks for physical damage training. I am sure that is different now but it was fun at the time. They have training locations in Phoenix, AZ, Ohio and Florida.

As for the reasons I really enjoyed being an adjuster. It is very analytical. It's 90% investigation. Figuring out what happened in the accident, who did what in the accident and assigning fault. It's not clear cut and sometimes there are people who are 5 or 10% at fault. Progressive was not, and as of last year, still is not a company that nit-picks the 5-10% stuff.

Liberty Mutual was one that did ding people for small percentages of fault, only paying 85% of their damage or something.

I loved taking all the puzzle pieces and putting the "story" together. For that reason I also think I would really like being an accident reconstructionist!!!

Let's see ... what else. Their salaries pretty comprable in the market. When starting out I made approx. $36K. That was in 2003/2004.

If you have any specific questions please let me know. You can PM me or send me your email.

As you can see I really liked the job!! I liked it a lot at Liberty Mutual as well, they just did things a little differently as do all the companies. I only left to be a SAHM.

I do as well. Thanks for the post it made my night.

In our area they just laid off half of the adjusters. One of them still left is a customer of ours and he said the work load now is crushing.
