My DS11 wants one, too. My DH researched it and said it was too bulky and if your handwriting isn't perfect, it can't read it. But I talked to a saleman in Target who had tried it and he loved it. So, we're kind of going back and forth. It is pretty big and the package was heavy, since the package only contained the flypen, I thought it might be too heavy, too. I started adding up everything you needed with it, 29.99 per program, 29.99 for the charger, special fly paper and notebook, etc. and it was over 200.00. JMO, but I'd really like to hear if anyone has had one/used one, too.

I bought one for my niece for Christmas and I don't really know much about it but at Target the have a starter set and fro $129 you get the pen, charger, paper, games and a couple of other things - I though it was a great deal!!

This was the number one thing on my son's list so I caved and bought it although I had heard the handwriting stuff(and his is terrible) but I am hoping that maybe it will improve as he tries to get the pen to work. I hope it is as cool as it looks. ;) And he HAD to have the red one so I bought it at Target- then I saw they sell face plates for $10 for it so you can custom color your pen. FYI

Also bought this for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas--hope it is worth it!

I got one for my son. I was also concerned about what this was going to cost me in the end and whether it would really be able to read his handwriting. So, I carefully removed it from it packaging and tried it out. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't have any problems recognizing my handwriting (and mine is pretty sloppy). There were just a couple of times when it told me to "draw a BIGGER square" <g>. It doesn't require the charger. I have quite a few rechargeable batteries already for a digital camera and at least initially I'll use those. However, I'm not sure how quickly it eats those batteries. If he ends up really using this, I'll probably end up getting him the charger.

This is at the top of DS's list, and think we'll end up giving it to him for his birthday on Friday (he'll be 11). I'll try to remember to report back next week when he's had a chance to use it for a while (i.e. run the batteries down)......

Thanks all! PP I would love a report. I am just out of any ideas. It is such an aqward age to buy for.

FYI For anyone in my spot. I did by her a decent digital camera at Target Samsung 130$ for her B day and it was so worth it. She uses it constantly ...just in case anyone needs an idea...

OK, dumb question here.... What is a FLY? I have 3 boys here (ages, 15, 13, and 8) - would this be something any of them would be interested in? Always looking for Christmas ideas....

I've gotten one for DD12 and DD17, too. DD17 because it looks cool, and DD12 because I'll try anything to help her FINALLY learn those multiplication tables!!! If using a FLY pen will help with those math skills, I'll pay a million bucks for it (not really, but it sure looks awafully cheap next to those tutoring charges per hour!!!!)

Plus, if I'm good they might let me play with it while they are at school....

I've played with it and its pretty kewl- but for how long? thats up to the user...

I had a few times I had to write letters over again but I soon learned how to do it their way and it was easier...

For anyone that has this pen, do you need to buy anything special to be able to play any of the games ? I was looking at this one sleepover game and the package said something about needing a cartridge ?? :confused3

I think there is seperate things for most games/extra software- I know the basic toy has about 5-6 games included including flytunes where ya can draw a keyboard and it plays different notes

My daughter will be getting this thursday night for her birthday along with several of the notebooks to go with it. I will report back.

OH!! Any reports back would be great... we're giving it to DS on the 17th, he asked for it & that's about all he asked for!

My ds 8 almost 9 is interesed in one also! Has anyone tried the games? I am wondering what the "interactive" baseball cards do?? Would love to hear some more reviews!

Well my daughter opened hers. Basically it is a pen with no ink, When you rub it over a ? programmed I guess sheet of paper it does something. LIke it has a dj board and it makes scratching noise like a dj spinning a record. It has math sheets that I think it tells you the answer to the problem and so forth. I got notebook paper, a journal and a few other things. It also plays music and comes with ear buds. She really likes it and said thanks for the awesome but small piece of technollogy.
If anyone has any more specific questions let me know and I will try and ask her.

This was a hit with DS! He played with it on and off yesterday (snow day) and today, and so far hasn't run down the battery (it takes 1 AAA-not sure the recharger is necessary for an additional $30). There are so many things it does, and it's a lot of fun to try everything. There's a real variety of games, which DS has enjoyed. The handwriting part takes a bit to catch onto, you have to write SLOWLY in order for it to understand (at least at first). The real question is how long this will hold his interest, but suspect it will be on par with other things of the same price point. He's getting the FlyBall game (baseball card) for Christmas so can't comment on that yet. I think 11 and up is the ideal age and am not sure it would be as good for someone younger - just don't think it would hold younger kids interest as long. BTW, I used my TRU 20% off coupon for this and think I did well as I have yet to see it discounted.
HTH!

Now that many of your kids opened these, what are your thoughts? Considering for DD's b'day, but still not sold on them.

I had bought one for her for Christmas, but had spent WAY too much on her already and it was not needed, nor what she wanted most. I took it back! There were lots left on shelves close to Christmas so I wonder if the price will drop.
