Anyone with children!!

Hello, I am not sure if this is where I should have posted this, but I needed to share something I seen on Dateline or one of those shows. If you are staying off site in a villa or really anywhere with a hot tub watch your children. On the show that I seen Children are playing in the hot tubs and covering the intake to the filters (which are usually on the bottom of these hot tubs) within seconds the pounds of pressure become so strong that 2 adults possbily could not pull a child up if they were to become stuck. The newer hot tubs are coming with an emergency shut off if the vent were to become blocked and I know most resorts do not allow children in the hot tubs so thats why I bring attention to anyone staying offsite in a villa that has one.

I don't mean to scare anyone, I just know what an impact this had on me when I saw it!!! One of those I never would have known things.

Yes that IS a scary thing, but it can happen. Children should NEVER be left unattended in a hot tub...IMO they shouldn't be allowed in them at all. It's pretty gruesome what can happen to a child who is in the situation you described. I won't go into it as this IS a family site, but think horror film gruesome and you'll get an idea. It's really bad.

kiddie pools are for the kiddies for a reason!

I had heard of this before but thank you so much for the reminder. Sometimes we tend to forget about these types of tips because we don't hear about it happening too often thank goodness. My DH considers me to be quite overprotective. As a matter of fact, I have been called a "Helicopter Mom," because I do tend to hover. (There has to be a support group for this somewhere!!) Anyway, I can just hear him telling me to "lighten up" about this one. That's Ok though, I can deal with it.
We do take our DD(5) into the hot tub with us or we wouldn't be able to go at all. Sorry - littleladykaty. We do watch her though and try to keep her on our laps or sitting/standing next to us. We would never let her play in one alone. It is not a play pool by any means. Our theory is that hot-tubs are a place to relax and that's what we use them for.
Thanks again for the reminder, just thinking about it makes me want to go hug my kids.

Thank you! I am a kid and don't really care for hot tubs, I'm rather for pools. But I know my mom WILL watch me when and if I go in one at Disney, because she'll probably be with me!

Not only should children not be left unattended, I don't think they should be in there in the first place. Many hot tubs are set at about 130-140 degrees. That's why they recommend about 15-20 minutes in them AND THAT'S FOR ADULTS!!! Children are more sensitive to heat and the ability to deal with it and that's why most (all of the hot tubs I've been in) say NO CHILDREN!!!

It should also be a concern for diabetics and those with heart conditions, high blood pressure etc. etc.... The water temp should be turned down for those also.

It seems that its more of a problem in the summer, alot of people have their hot tubs and pools almost at the same temp due to the heat, so its basically a bubbly pool to the little ones.

One of those things that will stick in a mothers (or father's) head, when everyone else thinks she/he is nuts or overprotective!!!!

The accidents that have happened with hot tubs have also happened with kiddie pools and full size pools. It is horrible and there have been several very publicized incidents with children dying and/or being seriously injured.

I recently watched a repeat of a special profiling the swimming pool incidents and the only specific place I remember was at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas (a nice place). That actually happened in the swimming lagoon and the childs arm? was sucked in as she swam by the intake pipe and she died. A child in a kiddie pool was sitting on the intake grate in the middle of the pool. That child didnt die but suffered catastrophic injuries and will never be the same again (dont remember the location of this incident as my twins were running around like crazy during the show).

I was surprised to read the 130-140 degrees hot tub comment as I thought the law in most places for public hot tubs was 104 max. which feels quite hot to most people. We cant even set our home one to go over 104 and my daughter (life guard) helps maintain the country club one and it taps out at 102 max (they dont allow under 16 in that one, even with parents).

We dont use public hot tubs for sanitary reasons. Warm places, lots of things like to grow I know they are cleaned and sanitized, but so many people in and out of them and that hot water, ugh. My own personal paranoia. We have our own spa at home which is perfectly clean, up to safety standards and the kids love. The girls dont even ask to get in public hot tubs. They know the answer.

My personal feelilng is that childeren and I'm not talking young adults 18+, should not be allowed in the hot tub and NEVER unattended. I have seen too many children in them, who want to swim and use it as if it were just another pool. I love children and even have some myself, but feel hot tubs should be an adults only relaxation aide.
The temperature of the water is hot, which can raise your blood pressure and even cause a form of hydryation.
