Anyone with a Beta fish..need some opinions

I've had a blue beta with me for college for about a year and a half now. Lately he seems a little different though (i guess when you have a fish for that long you learn their moods ) His scales are also turning a sort of brown silvery color, escpcially right around his head and on his belly. Does anyone have a beta that this has happened to? Should I be preparing myself for him to die soon? I guess its stupid to be getting so upset about a fish, but I've had him for so long that he really is just like a normal pet

I don't know if it's just age or what but, that just happened to our Beta and he died yesterday. Ours was about a year and a half too.

Our last one Otis.......lasted almost 3 plus years......this was like the final days when his color changed...sort of drab like......I am sorry......we sort of got used to having Otis around too......Mr. feeney only lasted two days...but that is another story....sorry Megster

I did a search and they seem to live an average of 2 to 3 years. Overfeeding can cause them to live shorter lives. The site suggests to feed them 3 to 4 bits/flakes of food per day. Also, the site suggests adding 1 teaspoon non-iodized salt per liter of water if you suspect your Beta is ill.
