Anyone who has given their child an unusual name ...

Dh and I have pretty normal names: Aaron and Alexandra, although I go by Alex. Alex caused me some grief when I was younger because people thought it was a boy's name.

Our DD is Madelyn Elizabeth which is common but the spelling isn't the one people usually use. I just wanted it to be pronouned -lyn not -line. Our son due in February and he'll be Clayton Alexander. My dh is pretty adament that he will not be called Clay but I"m afraid when he gets older it will happen anyway.

My children have pretty traditional names, Madeline and Joseph. There are lots of Maddies around here, but they are mostly Madisons. I've met one or two Joeys but that is about it.

I hated my name growing up (Laurel.) I wanted to be Jennifer or Lisa. Everyone called me Lauren or Laura, and I just didn't like having an unusual name. I like it now, though.

I don't mind unusual names, but I HATE silly spellings.

Siobahn, Siorse....they just don't translate well in the US. Lovely names though.

I never could figure out how to say Siobahn... sort of just looked like "Sigh O bahn" no where in that name do I see how they would pronounce it like people say it.

It's Gaelic,

I'm sure someone who speaks that language would only read it "Shuh -von".

My DD is 31 and I had heard the name once that we chose to give her, on a televised beauty pageant. I have never seen it spelled the same way again. She has always liked her name.

If it makes you feel any better, we have a friend who named his son Clayton about 20 years ago and the child was never called Clay. Everyone called him Clayton. It stuck.

As for the name Eden.......I know a family in which the father insisted they name the son "Eden." The mom tried to talk him out of it, but he won. (The poor baby lost. ) They knew they were going to wind up in Texas, and let's be honest......To name a boy Eden in Texas is just begging for a butt whooping. For the first year or so, his mother resorted to calling him "the baby" because she couldn't bear to call him Eden. Finally, someone suggested "Ed." Ed it is.

You know the kid will go through life hearing, "Is that short for Edward?" And he will likely answer, "Uhhhhh...Yeah...."

My sister and brother in law are choosing names right now for their girl and it's hilarious the list they have...My sister has gotten to name the other two kids so he is trying to pick a good name for this one but she keeps shooting them down. I should show them this thread!

I'm trying to remember.....Back when they were debating the name, everyone on "her" side was cringing because we knew the child would be teased forever. I don't really know the mom except to chat a bit, so much as I know someone who is very close to her who keeps me updated. I gave her a lot of my DD's non-gender specific stuff when DD outgrew it. I'll ask the person who knows the back story and have her refresh my memory as to the reason he INSISTED on Eden. He simply would not take no for an answer. That much I remember.
