Anyone who has given their child an unusual name ...

I have a Mitchel. I'm very surprised that I didn't come across one while reading through this thread. I love his name. He mostly goes by Mitch

We have three girls.

Our oldest is named Jaelyn Reid. A lot of people mistake the "e" for a "c". Especially at the doctors office. She's almost 10 and back then we'd never heard of it. Now, we've known like... 5 others, but they've all been boys. Reid isn't after anyone in particular. DH's brother came up with it and it just stuck.

Our middle is Julia Marie. Common. DH and I couldn't decide on a name for her. Marie is my mother's middle name. Julia fits her though. She's full of spunk and life.

Our youngest is named Joelle Morgan. Joelle "Joe - elle" (L) is mispronounced all the time! I really didn't think it would be. She gets "Joe - lee" a lot. We were going to just name her Joey, but DH said she should have a proper name.:rotfl2: She fits "Joey" to a T, and her sisters call her Jojo. I know only one other girl with the name Joey, short for Josephine.

I'm preggers now with our fourth. If its a boy, it will be Jacoby Gavin. We've had this name picked out for years but never been able to use it. If its a girl, .... I have no idea what we'll name her! I want to get away from the J names, there aren't any more that I like, but DH insists on the J's! (His dad is named James, and we don't have any boys, so its kind of like paying homage to his dad.

Oh, and an interesting fact.... all the males on DH's side of the family have the middle name Harrison. All of his brothers do, my nephew does... it goes waaaayyy back and no one knows the reason why!

my 13 year old daughter is Joey. Thats her whole name it is not short for anything she posts here sometimes (on the teen board)

I have a Brady, too... Brady Alexander, very easy to call out to the 2 year old ;)

My others aren't really common. My oldest is Tyler, there are a few Tyler's that are older (14-15ish) and one or 2 he knows his age. Brady is my 2nd and my youngest is Caleb (goes by CJ, Caleb Joseph) again...none of them are overly popular, I hear more of Brady around here because of Tom Brady..but that's not the reason we choose it.

Girls names we had picked...Gabriella, Savannah and Kaleigh. I don't know any garbriella's. I know of one other Savannah that is my 2 year olds age and Kaleigh...I know of a couple, but strange enough, my best friend from HS and I caught up on Facebook about 6 months ago, he has a 5 year old named Kaleigh...spelled exactly how I wanted to. Most times you see it Kaylee, Kaylie...

Tyler and Caleb are very popular here.

I'd probably not use Koi either but our school does have at least 3 boys named Shad and I never hear anyone giving them crap about being named after a fish.

My name is Joyce - never went to school with anyone with my name, and never really knew anyone with the name. I could never find anything in the store with it.

When my DS was born we needed a nice short simple name since we have a long last name, most boy names I like would have been too long. We picked the name Mark - I don't think it is uncommon, but he has never had anyone in his class or even his school really with the name. He does have one friend Marc!

Roselyn- thats my name- no one can spell it correctly its either- Rozalind, Rosalynn Rosielin.. Hence why I perfer to be called Rose

My husband's family is Greek(*he's 1st generation American) so we went with a very common Greek name for my daughter, Eleni. In Greek it's pronounced Eh-LEN-ee. Unfortunately, being from the Deep South and having a Deep South Alabama accent, when I say it the name comes out ee-LAY-ee. Kinda drives her crazy. Eleni loves her "different" name. We have known a few people with the same name, all of them Greek. It's about as common as Kaitlyn or Ashley in Greek communities.

We named our boys American names, rather than Greek ones. In Greek, John would have been Yannis(or Yanni) and Christian would have been Christos or Christo. Cute, but a little too cute, ya know what I mean? I didn't want them going through life with weird names. Interestingly, John has never been in a classroom with another John IN HIS LIFE. And Christian isn't as common as you'd think.:thumbsup2

LOL, I know Koi is a love or hate it name...but it is what it is and we personally love it. If she decides she doesn't like it later she is more than welcome to go by Isabella. Everyone we know likes it, but then in our family we tend to have unusual names quite a bit..I have aunts/cousins named Louisiana, Ila, Iva, Fayone, Charm..just to name a few lol. Most are family names that date WAAYYY back...Charm came from a great uncle that was killed in the Civil War. And god love her my cousin Vania moved to England where she is happily wed to a welshman who decided to name their twin dds Countess and Duchess...we call them Tessa and Chessa though. Koi may be a bit more unusual than most, and there may very well be some mean people who do make fun of her but you know, we don't let those people dictate how we name our girls.

Me too! Im Jenifer Lee. My dc are Taylor Elise, Jordyn Olivia, Matthew Christian, Camryn Grace and Hayden Ella.
Those are all very popular names around here. Funny how it seems to vary by area. :)

:rotfl: When I first read your post, I thought it said "carp" :rotfl2:

Interesting, I've never heard the name Shad before. Chad, yes, but Shad, no.

But then, I've never heard of the fish, either.

I actually saw these today from Sundays paper, I had to post them on my facebook and will share here too

My name is Nicola Adele. Everyone pronounces it Nicole-A, but its Nic-a-la

If I still lived in England my name would be fine. But we moved to the US when I was 8 and have hated my name ever since. My mom says that I never liked my name and when I was little a lady asked me my name and I told her FRED!!!

Ugh, I HEAR you!! Just out of curiosity, when you go a restaurant or anywhere that asks you for your name, do you cringe and wish you didn't have to cause then you'd have to spell it or explain it, etc? .

I have an old fashioned virtue name--and not one of the prettier ones like Grace. It's a good name, but I sound like I should be a buttoned down stern-faced teacher. (I used to be a fun teacher!)

When I'm somewhere that needs a name, I make one up or use my last name.

I hate cre8ive spellings, people that give their daughters "Mac" or "Mc" names (since that means son of), or made-up names. I have to wonder if the parents wanted their children to have name issues for the rest of their lives.

My children have "normal" names, although when I was pregnant with DS22, we told DH's nephew the baby was going to be named Alexander Lowell Scott Bobby Knight Boilermaker Keady lastname. This nephew gave each of his kids three middle names, and each name is horrid! He thought the full name we gave was great, and never realized we were making fun of him.

My mamaw (farm wife and mother of 11) said the best way to name a child was to stand at the back door and yell the name loudly, because that's how you would be saying the name for years. If it was easy to yell, it was a good name.

One of my absolute favorite sites is http://notwithoutmyhandbag.com and her list of bad baby names. It's hilarious!

Funny you should mention that. Back in the early 80's I went to some fair thing and met a soap star and Enos from Dukes of Hazard. That was about a month or two before that Eden character on Santa Barbara. My mom swears the actress went back and got my name circulated in the soap scene. I don't know which soap the actress was from, but I think it was just a coincidence. ;)

Hahaha. I have a friend who named her daughter Eden after Santa Barbara :)

That reminds me of when I was pregnant with my daughter. I liked the name Charity, but my husband said no - he thought it sounded like an exotic dancer's name

In my preK/class, I have....

Storm(sister Rain and brother Skye)

Lennox

Aya

Christani(pronounced Kris-tuh-nee)

Sergio

Other classes have...

Eli

Josine

Delphine

Asher

Giacamo(Pronouced Jock-uh-mo)

and I babysit for an Orion

I like all of them.

If I had another boy, I would name him Josiah.
For girl, Mara.

Marsha

worst name ever "Le-A"
how is it pronounced, you ask? not Lea
not Leia
not Lee-A
not Leigh

THe girl when asked said you pronounce the dash....Yes, this name is "Ledasha" . :lmao:

Tyler and Caleb are very popular here.

That's funny. Tyler knows of 2 Tylers from baseball, both are a year older than him. 1 in his class, then another early teens from after school program. And Caleb we only know of 1 other and he is in my middle sons class.

Brady, well I can understand that being popular in Patriots country :)

But I don't personally know of any, other than from disboards.

It's interesting how some names are so popular in some areas and others not so much.

ETA: My name..with the different spellings there were tons of us! Stacy, Stacey, Staci, Stacie.
